WHO NEEDS TO BE REBAPTIZED?

by R.J. Evans

"And  he said to them, 'Into what then were you baptized?'  So they said, 'Into John's baptism.'  Then Paul said, 'John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.'  When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus"  (Acts 19:3-5).

The above is an example of some at Ephesus who needed to be rebaptized.  They had been baptized "into John's baptism" which was no longer valid.  Perhaps, they had been taught and baptized earlier at Ephesus by Apollos, who "knew only the baptism of John," whom Aquila and Priscilla had taken "aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately" (Acts 18:25-26). Christ gave the command to be baptized when He gave the Great Commission (Mk. 16:15-16; Matt. 28:18-20). His baptism is the "one baptism" of Ephesians 4:5 that went into effect on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:38-41). Thus, John's baptism had become obsolete, and was no longer in force or valid.

There are many people today who strongly object to the inclusion of baptism in God's plan of salvation.  Even if they were "baptized," they believe it was for some other reason than what the scriptures teach— "for the remission of sins" (Acts 2:38). Thus, relying on an unscriptural baptism, when approached about being scripturally baptized, they protest with the affirmation: "I've already been baptized; I'm alright!"  But one who so steadfastly opposes Bible teaching on baptism could not possibly have been scripturally baptized.  It is not possible to be taught wrong, and baptized right.  Let us observe some examples of those who need to be rebaptized:

1.  Those whose baptism has the wrong authority behind it. Some are baptized by the authority of some man-made denomination.  To begin with, Jesus never authorized denominationalism—He taught against it (Matt. 15:13-14; 16:18; Jn. 17:20-26).  Thus, Jesus never authorized denominational baptism, even if claimed to be "for the remission of sins."  For example, the Mormon church baptizes "for the remission of sins," but the authority of Christ is not behind it.  Morman baptism has the authority of man behind it—Joseph Smith, its founder.  The baptism our Lord has commanded is by His authority—in His name (Matt. 28:18-20; Col. 3:17).

2.  Those who were sprinkled as infants.   Sprinkling is not baptism; baptism (baptizo) is immersion in water—a burial (Jn. 3:23; Rom. 6:3-6; Col. 2:12).  Scriptural baptism is for those who are old enough to be held accountable unto God for their sins.  Infants have no sins, therefore, they are not the proper candidates for baptism.  Scriptural  baptism is for penitent believers who can confess by mouth their faith. i.e., penitent sinners who are in need of salvation (Mk. 16:15-16).

3.  Those who have made the wrong confession.  In as much as Bible baptism is to save us (Mk. 16:16; 1 Pet. 3:21), most of the religious world believes they are saved prior to being baptized.  Such a confession as— "God for Christ's sake has pardoned my sins" (or various versions of the unscriptural so-called "sinner's prayer") prior to baptism is unauthorized by scripture.  The proper confession of faith that precedes baptism is found in the example of the Ethiopian, who told Philip, "See, here is water.  What hinders me from being baptized?"  Philip said to him, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And then we have the proper confession when the eunuch said: "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God"  (Acts 8:37). After that, they both went down into the water, Philip baptized him, and the Ethiopian went on his way rejoicing (Acts 8:38-39).

4.  Those who have been baptized for the wrong purpose.  When one disavows any connection between baptism and salvation, then what he submits to is not Bible baptism.  The idea that one is baptized because he has already been saved (some describe it as an outward sign of an inward feeling) is totally foreign to Bible teaching.  We are not baptized becausewe are saved; we are baptized in order to be saved.  The "one baptism" (Eph. 4:5) of the Bible "saves" (Mk. 16:16; 1 Pet. 3:21), is "for remission of sins" (Acts 2:38), or "washes away sins" (Acts 22:16), and puts one "into Christ" (Gal. 3:27).

5.  Those who become members of the wrong church.  How could one be scripturally baptized into Christ and yet end up in some human, man-made church?  Some are baptized today into a denomination as a result of a vote taken by the congregation.  The right (scriptural) baptism puts one into the Lord's body, the church (Acts 2:36-47;         1 Cor. 12:13; Gal. 3:27).

6.  Those who wear the wrong name.  Those who are baptized by the wrong authority, into the wrong church, invariably begin to wear a man-made, unscriptural religious name or title.  Scriptural baptism makes one simply a Christian—a disciple of Christ (Acts 11:26; 26:28)—a name he is honored to wear (Jas. 2:7; 1 Pet. 4:16).

What should one who has been "baptized" with an unscriptural, invalid baptism do?  Exactly what those in Acts 19:5 did— "When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus."  In other words, the one in this situation should be happy to be baptized again, scripturally, by the right method, for the right reason, by the right authority, and for the right results.  Are you one who needs to be rebaptized?

The Great Apostasy and the Restoration Movements

Kola Ajibola

Introduction

History apportions commendation and condemnation appropriately and that accounts for the reason why history is said to be the best judge. One of the main purposes of history is to preserve the deeds of men from being forgotten. Church history is in no way different. Church, being a New Testament institution, has her origin from the New Testament with her prophecies in the Old Testament of the Holy Writ – the Bible. The church is presented in the Bible as one institution characterized by unity.

However, what we see around us today is nothing but religious confusion with so many different churches having differing, contradictory and conflicting doctrines and way of life with different hopes of eternity. How did it happen? What past efforts had been made? Was there any good result? What can the disciples of Christ today do about it? This forms the major burden of this article.

Origin and Growth of the One True Church (The Lord's Church)

The New Testament reveals the establishment and early growth of the church Jesus Christ promised to build some six months before His death (Matthew 16:18). He bought the church with His precious blood (Acts 20:28; cf. John 19:31-37), He loved and gave Himself for the church (Ephesians 5:23-27). The Lord's will is that there be only ONE church for He prayed for the unity of His followers (John 17:20-23). Later, we read of this church as being one body (Ephesians 4:4-6; cf. 1:22-23; Colossians 1:18, 24). The church came into existence the first Pentecost following the resurrection of Jesus Christ (Acts 2) and since then, the church was always spoken of as something in existence, and people were being added to it (Acts 2:47). Peter referred to the incident of Acts 2 (Pentecost day) as the beginning (Acts 11:15-16); which is the beginning of the church as the spiritual reality of the body of Christ and also the visible church at around 33 AD in Jerusalem in line with prophecies (Dan. 2:44; Isaiah 2:1-3; Micah 4:1-2; Lk. 24:44-49).

The book of Acts beginning with chapter 2 gives the divine history of the church. The church started from a small beginning to be a mighty force in the world (Matt. 13:31-32). God added about 3000 souls the first day (Acts 2:41). Soon the number grew to about 5,000 (Acts 4:4) and multitudes of both men and women were added to the Lord (Acts 5:14; 6:1). Within thirty (30) years Paul could say that the gospel had come to "all the world" and that every creature under the heaven had been preached to (Col. 1:5-6, 23). The seed of the kingdom (Luke 8:11; Acts 8:4) was planted and watered and God gave the increase (1 Cor. 3:6). The book of Acts records the beginning of the church in many different cities: Jerusalem (Acts 2); Samaria (8:5-12); Caesarea (10); Antioch of Syria (11:19-21); Paphos and Antioch of Pisidia (13:6-49); Iconium and Lystra (14:1-23); Philippi (16:12-40); Thessalonica, Berea, Athens (17:1-34); Corinth (18:1-11) and Ephesus (19).

The seed that produces the church is that which determines every characteristic of it. The seed which is the Word of God, not only saves, but also makes people members of the church – called-out, ekklesia (2 Thess. 2:14; Rom. 1:16; Jas. 1:21; 1 Pet. 1:23). The Word has to be respected deeply enough to render obedience (1 Pet. 1:22; Rom. 6:17-18). Continued respect and obedience must characterize the church (Jude 3; 2 Tim3:16-17; Gal. 1:8-9; 2 John 9). The church is the one body that is ruled by one head (Eph. 4:4; Col. 1:18; Matt. 28:18; Eph. 5:23-24). The respect for divine authority will produce many distinctive and identifying features of the Lord's church among which are: sound scriptural teaching, name, worship, work, organization, purity of life. A lack of respect for divine authority will produce corruption in all of these features identified above and bring apostasy and such was what happened as time went by.

Apostasy

Apostasy is a falling away from God's truth. In the first place, we really should not be surprised by the plethora of different churches, for in the Bible itself, we read that there would be "falling away…" (2 Thess. 2:1-3) from God's truth, that is "apostasy." As noted earlier, apostasy is rooted in lack of respect for divine authority.

Apostasy Prophesied

Several prophecies abound in the Bible about the coming of apostasy. For example, Apostle Paul, warned the Ephesian elders (also called shepherds, pastors, bishops, presbyters cf. I Peter 5:1-4; Acts 14:23; 20:17, 28) at Miletus . He informed them of what was about to happen: "For I know this, … grievous wolves will enter in among you, not sparing the flock. Also from your own selves will men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after themselves." (Acts 20:27-31, IKJV; emphasis, KSA). To the brethren at Thessalonica, he wrote: "Now we request you, brethren, with regard to the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ … Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction (2 Thess. 2:1-3, NASB; emphasis, KSA). In warning Timothy, an evangelist in 1Timothy 4:1-5, 2 Timothy 4:1-4, and 2:16-18,  Paul described how some will depart from the faith by giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, forbidding to marry and commanding to abstain from meats. He continued in describing how some would not
endure sound doctrine
by getting teachers who would tell them what they wanted to hear and turning from the truth and turning aside to fables. He also warned Corinthians of false teachers (2 Corinthians 11:12-14).

It was not only Paul that prophesied about the great apostasy. Peter, Jude and John also did. Peter warned of false teachers to come in his second epistle (2:1-3) that false teachers would bring in destructive heresies and would have many followers. Jude warned of false teachers who were present (Jude 3-4, 16-19). He said they
had crept in unnoticed and were turning the grace of God into lewdness, denying the Lord God and the Lord Jesus Christ. John, the beloved warned of "antichrists" who had come (1 John 2:18-19; cf. 4:1, 5-6). According to him, many, in fact, had come! This was indicative of living in the "last hour."

Apostasy Prophecies Fulfilled

The giant step of great apostasy was never taken at once, but it was a gradual process.  The predictions of holy men of God came to fulfilment within 100 years of prediction.  As Jesus had warned, there would be false prophets (Matt. 7:13-20). Before the completion of the New Testament canon, the apostasy was already underway.  As we examine early church history, there are further indications that history is a teacher. Early Christians could have looked about them for evidence that man is prone to depart from the truth. For instance, Adam and Eve were not satisfied with God's perfect order of things (Gen. 3:6-ff). Adam's descendants departed so far that God found the flood necessary (Gen. 7:16-24). Note how Nadab and Abihu (Lev.10:1-2), David (2 Sam. 11:4), Solomon (1 Kgs.11:1-8) drifted from the way of the Lord to way of sin and death. The history of Jewish people is a history of their departures from God's law (cf. Judges 1-21, note 2:10-13 and Hosea 4:6).

Early in the history of the church, there were departures from divine order and pattern even while Apostles were still very much around them. Quickly, one can notice Ananias and Sapphira (Acts 5:1-11) who drifted away from holiness to lying (what people today would call 'diplomacy'), false teaching concerning circumcision and keeping of the Law (Acts 15, Galatians 1-6, Col. 2, Heb. 7-9). The situation of the Corinthian church was such a bad one in the first century. Among them, we found sectarianism - spirit of denominationalism (1 Cor. 1-3), fornication (1 Cor. 5), taking brethren to court (1 Cor. 6), corruption of the Lord's Supper (1 Cor. 11), erroneous teaching on the resurrection (1 Cor. 15). There were those who were set on "one-man rule" (3 John 9-10). Five of the seven Asian churches were not faultless. Ephesus had left her first love (Rev. 2:4). Some at Pergamos held to the doctrine of Balaam and the Nicolaitanes (Rev. 2:14-15). The church in Thyatira allowed Jezebel to seduce the Lord's servant (Rev. 2:20). The church in Sardis was dead (Rev.3:1). Laodicea was lukewarm (3:16). Only Smyrna (2:8-11) and Philadelphia (2:7-14) were faultless.

As the years went by, many false teachings and practices were brought in. In 157 AD, Penance was introduced. About the year 318, a controversy arose in Alexandria respecting the person of Christ: was He eternal and divine just as God the Father, or was He a creature, created by God? This controversy necessitated the Nicea Council of June, 325 AD. A great number attended the meeting and decided that Jesus Christ was eternal with the Father. This step was the most significant of all departures. It symbolized the removing of the authority from Jesus, the head, and placing it in the hands of men. With this step of departure, other departures flew in like flood. In 394 AD, Mass was introduced to the worship of the church. Image worship was brought in in 405 AD.  Extreme Unction came in 588 AD. In 593 AD, Purgatory was added. Instrumental music was introduced in 570 AD and Celibacy in 1015 AD. The list is now endless, because as you read this article, some false teachers are busy introducing other strange things into the church which is further leading them far away from the truth and making the hope of turning back very slim.

Even though, the step seemed innocent at first with the aim of attempting to deal with errors in and out side of the church which led to a change in the organization of the church from autonomous and independent congregation overseen by a plurality of elders also known as shepherds, pastors, bishops, presbyters (Acts 14:23; 20:17, 28;
I Peter 5:1-4) to a collectivity of churches under one bishop; resulting in centralization of power and influence among key individuals.

This was achieved by the introduction of distinction between bishop and elder (Titus 1:5, 7) which is scripturally baseless. This step was followed by extension of the authority of the bishop to congregations other than the one that appointed him which was another step into error. This led to city bishops who gradually became known as Metropolitan Bishops. At this time, churches of large area were combined under a single government and such area became known as diocese. With this, one of the Metropolitan Bishops graduated into a Diocesan Bishop.

By the close of 5th Century, the octopus of ecclesiasticism had spread until five centres ruled "Christendom." Five Bishops became known as "Patriarchs" – the centres are: Jerusalem , Antioch , Constantinople, Rome and Alexandria . The last step in the development of first Pope was taken in 588 AD, when John the Faster who was the Bishop of Constantinople usurped the title of Universal (or Ecumenical) Bishop.
After the death of John the Faster (he died in 596 AD), Boniface III who had become Patriarch of Rome, acquired for himself the title of Universal Bishop in 606 AD.

This subtle change made it much easier for error to spread when those in power began teaching false doctrine.  Before long, the very errors foretold by Paul and others were being taught (cf. 1Tim. 4:1-3). Through slow but gradual changes, the seeds of modern churches were sown producing what later became known as the Roman Catholic Church with many other "orthodox" churches (Greek, Egyptian, Russian, Armenian, etc.).

Just as foretold, many departed from the simplicity of the Lord's church and fell into apostasy. Apostasy grew as many types of Councils were held. Among these were:  the Council of Nicea (325, 787 AD), Constantinople (318, 553, 680 AD), Ephesus (431 AD), Chalceldon (451 AD) with the following doctrines enacted contrary to the sound teachings of the Bible: Clergy/Laity System, Sprinkling for Immersion, Infant Baptism, Celibacy, Instrumental Music, Transubstantiation, Indulgences, Worship of Mary,  Veneration of Relics, Purgatory, Confessionals, Images, Penance, Extreme Unction, Confirmation, Nuns, Primacy of Peter, Forbidding to Eat Meats, Religious Holidays and others.

In all these, the church of Christ continued (Matt. 16:18; Dan. 2:44; Luke 1:32-33). Even though not popular, or probably treated as heretics.

Reformation Movement and the Development of Denominations

Throughout the history of apostasy, many came to realize what had happened, and efforts were made to rectify the problem. This became known as reformation. The elements behind the reformation movement

were the corrupt practices of Catholicism, internal problems of Catholicism leading to split (1054 AD), the Inquisition (1229-1834 AD), the Renaissance, translation of Bible into different languages, invention of the printing press (1454) by John Guttenberg. Those that attempted to reform the apostate church were persecuted:  either executed or expelled (e.g. Martin Luther). Unfortunately, followers of such reformers often started new churches (e.g. Lutheran) against the mindset of such reformer. Other reformers were   The Albigenses, Wardenses, Peter De Bruys ( France ), John Wycliff ( England ), John Huss ( Bohemia ), John Calvin, John Knox, Ulrich Zwingli,  Henry VIII – Church of England, John & Charles Wesley – Methodist church. The period of these gentlemen was a period of Protestant denominational births instead of being a reformation period. Catholic Church was the first to fall away from divine pattern in 606 AD, followed by Greek Catholic (1054 AD). With the reformation movements, the following denominational churches were given birth to: Lutheran (1521),  Church of England (1534), Methodist (1739), Pentecostal Movements [Church of God (1880), Nazarene (1895), Pentecostal (1896), Assembly of God (1914)], Presbyterian Church (1541), Baptist Church (1607), Mormons (1830),  Seventh Day Adventist (1843),  Jehovah Witness (1872), Christian Science (1875), etc. All the attempts and efforts of these men were similar to the reformation of Jehu in 2 Kings, chapters 9 and 10. God commanded him to destroy Ahab's family (vs.4-10). He killed several people but fell short of restoring the true worship (2 Kgs. 10:29-31). He corrected some wrongs but kept others. This is the exact pattern that all reformation movements (both old and modern) follow.

Restoration Movements

The call for the restoration of church of the New Testament to its original state is centred on restoring the New Testament pattern for the local church in organization, worship, work, life, hope, etc.  The following four basic principles have been the focus:

1.       New Testament scriptures as the only authoritative rule of faith and practice.

  1. Renunciation of all human creeds be it manual, discipline, catechism, etc. Human Creeds are divisive by their very nature and the acceptance of the precepts and examples of Jesus as the only creed binding upon Christians.
  2. Restore Apostolic or New Testament concept of the Church in the minds of men.
  3. Unity of all Christians upon the basis of the Bible.

Some of those who were outstanding during the restoration period are: James O'Kelly, Elias Smith and Abner Jones, Bartow W. Stone, Thomas Campbell and Alexander Campbell.

James O'Kelly: He was a Methodist preacher who worked in Virginia and North Carolina . On many occasions he found himself at odds with Francis Asbury, the Bishop. He advocated congregational autonomy and disagreed over appointment procedures of the conference. He appealed to the conference for a change in the procedures in 1792 but he, Rice Haggard and three other preachers were denied at the Conference and they withdrew themselves and formed a body known as the " Republican Methodist Church " in 1793. In 1794, this name was rejected and the group declared the Bible as sufficient guide and wanted to be known as Christians. From this standpoint, the movement devised what became known as the "Five Cardinal Principles of the Christian Church." Weaknesses can be seen in these "Principles" but that these people were on their way back to the ancient order is evident.

Elias Smith(1769 - __): He was  baptized into Baptist Church in 1789 when he was greatly concerned over the subject of baptism. He began to preach for Baptist Church shortly thereafter; even though he had some misgivings about certain doctrines held by the Baptists. This motivated an intense investigation of Bible teaching. In the spring of 1802, he rejected Calvinism and found that the name of the followers of Christ to be Christians (Acts 11:26) without addition of the words "Baptist," "Methodist," etc. He left Baptist and worshiped with 5 members in rented hall in Portsmouth . He proclaimed Christ as One and Only Lawgiver. One of the amazing things about these activities was that the men involved had no contact with or knowledge of the others. In 1803, he was visited by Dr. Abner Jones ( Vermont ), a medical doctor and Baptist Preacher. Jones had left the Baptist Church in 1801 and had rejected human names also and contended for absolute authority of the New Testament. After 1803, Smith and Jones joined forces and established churches free of denominational ties.

Barton W. Stone (1772-1844): He was 18 years old when he went to the famous school of David Caldwell near Greensboro in order to be admitted to the bar. While there, he heard James McGready, a popular Presbyterian preacher and a year or so later, he joined the Presbyterian Church and began to preach in North Carolina . He moved to Cane Ridge , Kentucky and was ordained a minister.  When asked at his ordination if he received the Confession of Faith, he replied, "I do, as far as I see it consistent with the Word of God." As he preached, he appealed directly to the Word of God and soon rejected the doctrine of total depravity. He then began to preach the universality of the gospel and faith as a condition of salvation. In 1801, plans were for great revival at Cane Ridge, the revival was estimated to have been attended by between 20,000 to 30,000 attendees. As a result of the revival, trouble developed with the Presbyterian synod. As a result of differences, Stone and 4 others withdrew from the synod to form their own called "The Springfield Presbytery" in 1803. In 1804, they recognized error of forming another Presbytery and therefore dissolved the Springfield Presbytery.  On June 28, 1804, they issued "The Last Will and Testament of the Springfield Presbytery."

Thomas Campbell (1763 – 1854): He was a Presbyterian preacher in Ireland and because of his poor health went to America for relief. He arrived Philadelphia in the spring of 1807 and presented himself to the Synod and was assigned to Chartiers Presbytery in Pennsylvania . He preached things contrary to Presbyterian doctrine. He opposed all human creeds and contended for the all-sufficiency of the Bible. He was suspended by the synod in 1808 but continued to preach in homes, schools, and out in the open. He coined the phrase "Where the Bible speaks, we speak, and where the Bible is silent, we are silent." In one of his meetings, when he finished the sermon with the phrase above, as soon as he sat down, there was silence. Andrew Munro broke the silence with this statement: "Mr. Campbell, if we adopt that as a basis, then there is an end to infant baptism." Campbell replied: "If infant baptism be not found in the Scriptures, we can have nothing to do with it." In 1809, he wrote the Declaration and Address in which he set forth the famous slogan, "In faith, unity; in opinion, liberty; in all things, charity."

Alexander Campbell (1788-1866): He was 20 years old when his father sent for the family to come to America . He arrived America in 1809 from Northern Ireland . Reunited with his father, he read through Declaration and Address shortly after his arrival. He resolved to devote his life to studying the word of God and proclaiming it. He preached his first sermon in 1810 at the Brush Run. Soon, the subject of baptism began to trouble him and from his study he learned and concluded that infants were not proper subjects of baptism. Besides he learned the action was immersion and not sprinkling or pouring of water. He also learned that confession of faith should precede baptism and not the relating of an experience as practiced by Baptist Church . He and six others were baptized on 12th June, 1812; and practically the entire Brush Run church followed example. This action made enemies of the Presbyterians and caused Baptists to become his friends. He joined the Redstone Association of Baptist Churches, defended the cause of baptism in two debates and declared that baptism was not administered to a member of the church. This caused a rift between Alexander Campbell and the Redstone Association and he was charged with heresy, but acquitted. In 1823, he withdrew from Redstone and joined Mahoning Association but found this to be unscriptural in 1830 and then dissolved the association.

"Raccoon" John Smith (born 1784): He had Baptist background. When he desired "experience," he was told to pray and wait upon the Lord. After his father's death in 1804 he began to seek assurance, prayed earnestly, found some relief and related to Baptist Church . In 1804, he was unanimously voted a subject of a work of grace and desired to preach but faced two obstacles: Ignorance; could barely read and Lacked a supernatural call. He moved to Alabama in 1814 during which he lost his children in fire and his wife died. Immediately, he returned to Kentucky ; Crab Orchard area and eventually discovered the truth and preached zealously. He was rejected by old friends, but he persevered and converted many. He met Alexander Campbell in 1824. He participated in unity meetings of 1831-32. During these meetings he delivered one of the great speeches of his life. "God hath but one people on the earth. He has given to them one Book, and therein exhorts and commands them to be one family… Let us then, brethren, be no longer Campbellites, or Stoneites, or New Lights, or Old Lights, or any other kind of lights, but let us all come to the Bible, and the Bible alone, as the only Book in the world that can give us all the light we need."

In Nigeria , the restoration movement began with E. O. Essien who was a member of Presbyterian church. He became dissatisfied with the worship, organization and the work of the church, having studied the Bible and opportune to have read through a correspondence on "Back to the Bible" which he picked up by the roadside in 1959. He was interested and wrote to the address on the correspondence course material this led to the visit of some American evangelists to the south-east of Nigeria in 1948. Since then, churches of Christ have been growing in Nigeria and spreading with the aid of faithful men of God sowing nothing but the pure seed of the kingdom (Luke 8:11).

Apostasies following Restoration

Faithful men of God must keep abreast of the word of God, knowing fully well that not until we cross the river, we will have issues on hand to battle with. There are issues which are capable of leading us astray. In this present age, we have issues such as our basic attitudes toward authority – Liberal versus Conservative, worldliness (in terms of immodesty, mixed swimming, dancing, social drinking, gambling, lottery, marriage divorce, and remarriage), assault on worship, new preaching style, church music, lifting up of hands in prayer, handclapping, female leadership, religious holidays, babies dedication, church discipline, creation: Literal or Non-literal, house church movement, fellowship of those who teach error, etc. The problem of those that have drifted away from the past had been lack of scriptural authority. Bible still says "… whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus…" (Col. 3:17) and "If anyone speaks, let him speak as the oracles of God…" (1 Pet. 4:11).

Conclusion

Apostasy is rooted in lack of respect for divine authority, that is, when God's will is set aside. The only sure antidote against apostasy is to reverse apostasy's course. The truth of God will produce the church; only the truth of God, faithfully followed, will assure God's approval here and His welcome words: "Enter thou into the joys of thy Lord."  All what we have noticed under the Restoration Movement were done by a group of men who determined to sow nothing but the pure seed of the kingdom which is the gospel of Christ (Luke 8:11). The principle of restoration works provided that we allow the Word of God to be our only guide and authority - cf. Acts 20:32; 2Tim. 3:16-17 and if we do not allow traditions of men to replace the commands of God - cf. Matt. 15:3-9. Otherwise we plant the seeds of apostasy and denominationalism all
over again!

When the seed was planted in the hearts of honest men and women in the New Testament period, it produced Christians and nothing less or more. By the preaching of the word, churches of Christ were established in every major city of the Roman Empire and so by preaching of the gospel, the church of the Lord was restored to the world. May we all realise that the hope of the world in this century is the same gospel.

As followers of Jesus, we will do well to imitate His service to God while on earth. Living under the Law of Moses, one could simply be a Jew (not a Pharisee, Sadducee, etc.). Living under the law of Christ (1Cor. 9:21) today, we should simply be Christians, not members of some denominational party- cf. 1 Cor. 1:10-13.

Reader, what are you religiously?  Are you involved with the descendants of the apostasy foretold in the Scriptures?  Or are you one of those whose response to the falling away has resulted in another denomination? Why not simply be a Christian, by letting the Word of God restore you back to the church of our Lord as revealed in the New Testament...? (cf.  Acts 2:36-42, 47). Follow the Bible in order to be simply a Christian. God help us to believe the gospel, obey it, and then preach it to every creature under heaven. This you can do by believing the gospel of Christ, repent of your sins, confess your faith in Christ, be baptised in water for the remission of your sins and continue to live a holy life in accordance with the Bible.

THE TRUTH ABOUT THE CALLING OF GOD

By 'Gbenga Fabunmi

This is an era of "I have been called by God". This is freely and confidently expressed by every Dick, Tom and Harry. The reason then why we have so many mush-room denominations otherwise tagged "churches or ministries". The unguarded moment which has brewed the unguarded statement also accounts for the galaxy of self-designated Apostles, Founder-Pastors, Presidents, Primates, Reverends and many other meaningless titles which must precede the regular nomenclatures of the charlatan's turned "men" of God.

What baffles us, is the wrong signal which these confused men are sending to the ignorant but innocent world. The self-appointed "spokesmen" of God are presenting the God of the Bible as a confused being like themselves. The God, who revealed Himself in the Bible had, however clear term "For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints" (1 Cor.14:33 – emphasis mine).

When a self-styled apostle, is called for example, he receives a name, a doctrine and practice and even a ministry which are quite different from those of Rev./Dr. "Goat" who claims to have been called also by the same God. We do not believe in this their claim because the God of the Bible says He hates divisions or schism (1Cor. 1:10-13; 12:25; Jno. 17:20-21).

One other surprising thing about these self-acclaimed "men of God" is that the very moment they are called; it automatically becomes a taboo to them to do any (secular) work again. A former bricklayer will throw away his shovel and head-pan while a carpenter will not be happy with any one who fails to address him as "Pastor/Rev. /Dr. Ram or Cat". If we may ask, who among the people so called in the Bible is their example? Is it Paul, the ever-busy and ever-ready Apostle or Peter, who combined the work of an apostle with that of an evangelist and was also a bishop but never, for once, lorded it over the church?(1Cor. 11:1; Acts 20:33-35; 18:3; Eph. 4: 28; 2Thess. 3:6-12; 1Pet. 5:1-3). We therefore want to assure you that the whole counsel of God concerning His calling will be declared in this short outline and you will no longer remain under the bondage of these false prophets (1Jno. 4:1; Matt. 24:4; 2Pet. 2:1)

I. The nature of the ca1ling of God:

There are 3 ages in the Bible and God, its author, has in divers manners spoken in each of the ages (Heb. 1:1).

(a) The Patriarchal age (Gen. 3:8-10; 6:9&13; 12:1).

(b) The Mosaical age (Num. 12:6-8; Exo. 33:11; Amos 7:14).

(c) The Christian age (Heb. 1:2; Matt. 17:5; Jno. 3:16-18; 12:44-50).

Christ is the spokesman of God in this age and we must hear Him.

II. How does Jesus Christ call in these last days (Heb. 1:2)?

(a) There is only one form of calling (1Cor. 7:20; Eph. 4:4; 1:18; 2Thess. 1:11; 2Pet. 1:10; Heb. 3:1).

(b) The calling is for all and not for a selected few (1Cor. 7:24; Acts 2:39; Gal. 3:27&28).

(c) The gospel is the medium of the calling(1Cor. 15:1-4; Rom. 10:17; 8-14; 1:16; 1Cor. 6:9; Matt. 28:18-20; Mk. 16 : 15& 16; 2Thess.2:14)

NOTE: Nobody is called again through vision or dream as being claimed in some quarters. Such a bogus claim amounts to another gospel (Gal. 1:6-9).

III Examples of those called by God through the gospel:

(a) The 3,000 Jews of the Pentecost day (Acts 2:14-41).

(b) The Samarians (Acts 8:4-8).

(c) The Ethiopian eunuch (Acts 8:26-39).

(d) Saul (Paul in Greek) (Acts 9:1-18; 22:12-16).

(e) Cornelius (Acts 10:1-6; 34-43).

(f) The Jailer (Acts 16:25-34).

IV. The purpose of the calling:

  1. To receive forgiveness of sin and salvation (Acts 2:38)
  2. To be fellow citizens in His Kingdom (Col. 1:12-14; Acts 2:41&47; 1Cor. 1:9; 1Thess. 2:12).
  3. To be saints/holy(Rom. 1:7; 1Cor. 1:2; Rom. 8:30; 2Tim. 1:9; 1Pet. 2:9; 1:15&16)
  4. Called into liberty (Gal.5:1&13; 1Pet.2:16; Matt.11:28).
  5. Called into God's glory (1Pet. 5:10; Tit. 1:2).

NOTE: Men are called to be saved and the saved are added to the Church. Nobody was ever called to establish a denomination, ministry or whatever. Salvation comes first before a person can become a useful tool in the hand of God.

    V. The attitude required of the called:

    a. Abide in the calling (1Cor. 7:20; Eph. 4:1; Heb. 2:1-3).

    b. Hold on to eternal life (1Tim. 6:11&12).

    c. Make your calling and election sure (2Pet.1:10; Phil. 2: 12).

Conclusion: The calling of God from the biblical point of view is what we have highlighted above. The gospel of Christ is the only medium through which the calling is done and any contrary claim will amount to falsehood.

If you will believe His gospel, repent of your sins, confess your faith in Christ and submit yourself for water baptism, the Lord will save you and add you to His Church (Acts 2:47; Gal. 26, 27). He is calling you too today (2 Cur. 6:2).

PROVIDING NECESSARY SPIRITUAL HELP FOR OUR CHILDREN IN CAMPUSES

By Kola Ajibola

“For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.” (Genesis 18:19).

A man might be on the whole a good man, and yet be marked by some defect which mars his character and prevents his usefulness or makes him the unintentional cause of much grief. Abraham was not such a man (Genesis 18:19) but Eli was (I Samuel 2:12-36).

Campuses of Higher Institutions of learning today in Nigeria and in fact in all over the world are full with one challenge or the other. These challenges are sometimes referred to as misconducts, disobedience to the constituted authority etc. They are in different sizes, shapes and colour. They include but are not limited to examination malpractices, sexual immorality, cultism, gambling, smoking, sagging, indecent dressing, immodest speeches, committing suicide, etc.

The wondrous and disheartening aspect of the trend is the very fact that those caught in these crime emerge from one home with a father who is expected by the Lord to “command his children and his household after him,” so that “they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment.” (Genesis 18:19, cf. Ephesians 6:3). Further injury is caused when the culprit claimed to be follower of Christ – Christian. It shocks and saddens even the more when the ‘criminal’ is from Elder’s (or Deacon’s, Preacher’s or even leading member’s) home.

The question now is what is the way out? To state that these problems never exist is like a man who deliberately closed his eyes pretending that he is asleep when he himself knows fully well that he is awake.

The Preliminaries

Many parents have left their God-given assignments in pursuit of worldly fame, position, recognition and other things (which war against their souls and that of their children) forgetting that they are sojourners and pilgrims here on earth (cf. 1Peter 2:11; ). The failures are sometimes traceable to the inability of the parent to use scriptural judgment in assisting the children in making lifelong decisions. For example, when there was a fight between the herdsmen of Lot and Abram in Genesis 12, Abram used scriptural principle and judgment when he said unto Lot, "Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren" (vs.8). On the contrary, Lot had forgotten that he was not alone and that he must think and apply God's wisdom and have deep thought about how he would lead his children in the way of the Lord (of which Abram could have been of great assistance to), who should be his in-laws, and the happiness of his daughters thereafter. Like many parents would do today by thinking of money
first, the worldly things first, etc: "And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other" (vss. 10-11). The rest was story and repercussion of his selfish and ungodly decision. He lost all he had: wife (who looked back and turned pillar of salt), daughters, home, happiness, wealth, son in-laws and all that he had ever worked for (Genesis 19:14-38). So many today are not careful or even careless in choosing where their children would study; all what concerns them is how would they 'make it'; forgetting that there is a way that seemeth right before man, but the end thereof is the way of destruction (Proverb 14:12). Many today have misled their children by choosing for them the best school in academics but the worst in moral and at the end, she became prostitutes and unbeliever even though she left home a Christian!

The Procedures

God had not left us without His words to lead us and guide us (Psalms 119:108; 2 Timothy 3:16). The Holy Bible which is the only book that contains the mind of God had a pattern for the parents on how to provide the necessary spiritual guide, help and assistance to our children in campuses of our higher institutions of learning.

God had given us duties and responsibilities in the home as a way of providing spiritual assistance for our children. Fathers have the duty to perform in bringing their children up in the ways of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). God expected it of Abraham (Genesis 18:19) and commanded Israel to teach their children in the way of the Lord (Deuteronomy 6:6-7). So, it is expected of fathers to provide the kind of leadership Joshua did for his family (Joshua 24:15).

In doing this, God expect from fathers to be patient with their children. Fathers are not to provoke their children to wrath (Ephesians 6:4) and must not be so overbearing as to discourage their children (Colossians 3:21); even though this does not mean that there is never discipline (Hebrews 12:5-11). Fathers are to provide the proper balance between love and discipline.

As parents, God expect us to teach our children from home before they leave for us for higher institutions how to honour their parent, because it is a duty for all children (Ephesians 6:1-2). They are to be informed that Children are to provide for their mothers and grandmothers (1 Timothy 5:4, 16). Failure to teach them all of these will mean preparing them to be unruly and disobedient to constituted authority.

In order to provide necessary assistance for our children in our campuses, there is the need to teach them from home how they should exercise themselves to godliness as Paul charged Timothy (1 Timothy 4:7-8). This involves fleeing some things, while pursuing others (1 Timothy 6:11; 2 Timothy 3:16-17) such as fleeing the love of money and youthful lusts (1 Timothy 6:10; 2 Timothy 2:22; 1 Corinthians 6:18); pursuing righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness (1 Timothy 6:11; 2 Timothy 2:22). In doing these, having been thoroughly grounded, will assist our children to make every effort to be a true child of God in their campuses even when we are several hundreds of kilometres away.

Additionally, we are to teach them how to utilize their God-given gifts (Romans 12:3-6). As a bachelor/spinster, we are to encourage them to be an example to other Christians. Remember, this was/is the charge given to Timothy, who was single (1 Timothy 4:12), likewise to Titus (Titus 2:7), even as Paul did himself (1 Thessalonians 2:10). We are to teach them to remember their creator in the days of their youth when they can use their freedom for the Lord. Paul wrote that the unmarried can do more for the Lord (1 Corinthians 7:32-34) because they do not have spousal and parental duties.

Many parents are fond of saying "we are praying for them (their wards)" who they have not taught the Words of Life. Matthew Henry, wrote (when he was commenting on Genesis 18:19) that Abraham "not only prayed with his family, but he taught them as a man of knowledge, nay, he commanded them as a man in authority, and was prophet and king, as well as priest, in his own house…" (emphasis, KSA). In order to assist these kids when they get to the campuses of higher learning in this perverse world which had been drunk with all evils and wickedness of the highest order, it is the duty of parents to teach them the way of the Lord and then pray with and for them.

The purpose

The Bible clearly stated that parents should "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Reading through Ecclesiastes 11:9 through 12:1, the wise man stated reasons and purposes for providing necessary spiritual help for our children. Among them are:

  1. The Youth has no guarantee of the future. Death has no respect for age, he strikes and kill any irrespective of the age. This is so because life itself is a vapour (James 4:14-17). Secondly, the Lord is coming in judgment and all must be prepared to meet Him (2 Peter 3:7, 9-11; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9). Parents are to supply the necessary aids and assistance to these children in and outside their homes and domains.
  2. Misspent youth can curse future life. The eternal law of sowing is still there: whatever you sow, you shall reap (Galatians 1:7-9), and there is danger in sowing the wild coats (Hosea 8:7), such as sowing the seeds of rebellion against parents when not rebuked, will germinated to rebellion against the constituted authority which will results in "carrying placards", participating in destructive and violence demonstration, stealing and the rest that goes along with it. Other seeds in this line included but not limited to lying, fornication, drug abuse and alcohol.

When parents inculcate into their children the necessity of remembering their creator all the days of their life, it is an effort in the right direction of providing the required spiritual assistance to them, this is so because the Bible declared that "Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying." (Proverbs 18:19).

The Pattern

The parents are to teach the whole truth to their children while they are with them at home and when they have gone to the higher institution for academic pursuit. There are lots of issues we must discussed at home level and teach very well to our children before they move to higher institutions where the will start to mix with 'all' philosophers of this world who had been given to errors and unsound doctrines whose eye of understanding had been darkened (Ephesians 4:17-19). Few of them are as listed below:

Teach about:

  1. Creation. Teach your child that Biblical story of creation is a reality and not chance! We are made in the image of God. Hence, all men are as a result of intelligent design and eternal purpose of God (Genesis 1-3; Ephesians 1); we are spiritual not alien (Acts 17:28), God is the Father of our spirits (Hebrews 12:9; Genesis 1:26; Matthew 10:28-29; Ecclesiastes 3:11).
  2. The Bible as the Word of God. Enforce daily reading of the Bible (Psalms 119:11; 2 Timothy 2:15). Let them see that the Bible contains commandments of God and not suggestions or opinions of men (Hebrews 2:1-3a; 10:28, 29).
  3. The New Testament Church. Let them see from the Bible that there is just only one church (Ephesians 4:4; Colossians 1:18, 24). Jesus died for the church to purchased it with His precious blood (Acts 20:28) and only those that are saved are members of the church (Acts 2:47), and that there are none who are saved that are not in it (Ephesians 5:23-27). Against what religious teachers and lecturers would teach and say such as "Join the church of your choice", the choice has already been made regarding the church. We are to teach them that our choice is the same as that of Joshua, who said: "Choose you this day whom ye will serve…" (Joshua 24:15). Make it clear that if they choose to serve Christ (which they must), they must choose His church(Ephesians 4:4-6; Matthew 16:16-18; Colossians 1:13, 18, 24).
  4. There are wicked people in the world. Let them know before they got out there that there are wicked people around in the world and most often among the closest friends. It may be hard to accept but teach them to be aware that in the world some of those who are enjoyable could be wicked, evil or even bad. Parents are responsible to let their children know about the warnings of the Bible concerning making friends with wicked and evil people (1 Corinthians 15:33; Proverbs 25:17; 1:10-19; Judges 16:1-20; 2 Samuel 11:; 13:1-5; Matthew 26:48,49). Teach that truth and righteousness may cause a separation between childhood friends as they become adults (Matthew 10:34-40; Luke 12:51-53). Teach them to beware but be friendly (1 Corinthians 13; cf. John 2:23-25; Matthew 10:16).
  5. God hates Divorce. Do not say they are young and that they can not comprehend. In this age of Computer, internet and technology it will surprise you that they are exposed to all kinds of dangers which they consider to be enjoyable not knowing that it would be for a season (Hebrews 11:25). If you really want and desire to assist them spiritually, you need to teach them repeatedly that God "hate putting away" (Malachi 2:16). Divorce is not God's desired purpose for man in marriage (Genesis 3:22-24). Make it clear that anytime a divorce occurs somebody had already sinned and probably continuing in sin until repentance (Matthew 5:32; 19:1-11; Luke 16:18; Mark 10:2-12; I Corinthians 7:1-16). Divorce negatively impacts a lot of people such as children, parents, affected couple, new partner that would be remarried, friends to the affected couple, the church and the nation. Teach your children to learn how to be committed when it is ripe for them to make a choice in the Lord concerning whom to marry.
  6. Baptism is important to salvation. Sound it loud that one can not be saved without water baptism (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15, 16; 1 Peter 3:21; Galatians 3:26, 27; Ephesians 5:23-26). Explain that baptism puts believers into Christ where remission of sins is (Romans 6:3-4; Acts 2:38; Matthew 26:28; 1 Corinthians 12:13) and that the baptized believer is under obligation to God to live right and conform himself unto the examples of Christ Jesus ( 1 Corinthians 11:1; Romans 6:1-11).
  7. Sin is black, Hell is hot and Eternity is forever. Let them know from time to time that there is no such thing as little sin or white lies (1 John 1:6-10; Revelations 21:8). Let them see from the pages of the scriptures that God does not fellowship with impenitent sinner (Isaiah 59:1,2; 1 John 1:6) and will punish sin and the issue of hell is not just another fairy tale (Mark 9:44-48; Matthew 25:44-46; Romans 2:5-11; 6:23).
  8. Integrity, honesty, respect for authority, moral courage and excellence (Romans 12:17; 2 Corinthians 13:7; 1 Peter 2:12). All are to be honest with God, His Word, Jesus Christ and His church (Number 32:23; John 12:48) and be honest with ourselves and be honest to other fellow colleagues (1 Peter 3:10; Proverbs 11:9). Be honest to teachers and Parents (Galatians 4:1-2; Ephesians 6:1; Romans 13:1, 2; Leviticus 19:32; Matthew 8:5-10). Our youth in our campuses are to be brave and ready to resist all influences that come their ways to lead them into sins. They are to be aware and be properly guided in the Bible that they will face challenges which they must confront with moral courage. These include modesty (1Timothy 2:9,10; 1 Peter 3:1-6; Proverbs 2:10); alcohol and drugs (1 Peter 4:1-4; Proverbs 23:29-35); dance (Galatians 5:21); Gangs (Proverbs 1:10-19); Charles Darwin's theory of evolution and humanism (Psalms 14:1; Romans 1:20); sex education and fornication (campus couple, 'aristo') (Matthew 19:1-12; Genesis 2:24-26; 1 Corinthians 7:1-5).

The Plea

Brethren, it is time for all of us to rise to the challenge of assisting our youth to know why we believe what we believe and we need to assist them in putting them through in all the ways that would make them a true disciples of Christ and a worthy ambassadors of Christ in their campuses and not to be a ready species and victim in the hands of wolves in our campuses.

This we must do because we are under obligation to God to do so and remain faithful just like Abraham did!

THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST TO THE MODERN MAN

By Kola Ajibola

Introduction

Virtually in the world today, there is nothing important and valuable that had not been forged by modern man. However, it is incredible to note that modern man with all his knowledge, scientific breakthrough, super technology and his quintessential abilities still embraces that which is inferior, fake and of little or no value. It is sad to observe further that this is not limited to physical/material things but also to spiritual things; even matters of salvation of soul.

The Gospel as understood by the Modern Man

To the modern man, several gospel of Christ are in existence and acceptable to him. It leans towards several directions which can be broadly grouped into orthodox, Pentecostal, protestant, and the new millennium gospel. This classification is easy to identify if one is acquainted with the prevailing doctrines of a particular group/sect/division/denomination. What is confusing in the whole matter is that all of these groups do lay claim to the Bible as their source of authority. Despite the fact that the Bible did not contain any contradictory teaching, yet the modern man held on tightly to different and contradictory and sometimes conflicting doctrines; this is equally amazing and disturbing to a sincere seeker of the truth.

Today, the modern man accepts, embraces and teaches that Jesus Christ is not the end of the Law and wants to see it taught in Matthew 5:17-18. Meanwhile, the Bible clearly teaches that Jesus is the end of the Law. "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believeth." (Romans 10:4; cf. Galatians 5:4; Ephesians 2:12-17). To the mind of the modern man, there are many mediators (prophets); yet the Holy Bible declared that there is just only one mediator, Jesus Christ (1 Timothy 2:5). In the opinions and views of the modern man, Jesus reconciles God to man which is contrary to the teachings of the Bible which says "Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation." (2 Corinthians 5: 18, 19; NASV).

Modern man teaches that Jesus Christ would save anyone who profess faith (Luke 6:46) forgetting that this group will include devils because "… the devils also believe, and tremble." (James 2:19). Contrary to this teaching of the modern man, the only book that contained the mind of God – the Bible says "…gospel … is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek." (Romans 1:16). The modern man believes that God saves some from all churches (the denominations/sects), while the Bible teaches that Jesus Christ is the saviour of the body, the only true church (1 Corinthians 12:12; Ephesians 5:23) which is just one and has its authority in the Bible only (Matthew 16:16-18, Ephesians 4:4; Colossians 1:13, 18, 24).

The modern man understood the gospel of Christ as containing the doctrines of men as he teaches for doctrine the commandments of men (Matthew 15:8,9) which includes direct calling (against the only gospel call available today – 2 Thessalonians 2:14), vision telling (contrary to how God speaks to man today, through Lord Jesus Christ – Hebrews 1:1-2), celebration of feasts, festival which had no scriptural precedence (no Bible passage to support the practice – practices that were never engaged in by the first century Christians) such as Easter, Christmas, Bazzar, etc.

In the understanding of the modern man, one can be freed through praying (1 Peter 3:12), which is contrary to the teaching of Holy Spirit who said one is freed by his obedience to the gospel of Christ (form of doctrine) "But thanks be to our God that you were the slaves of sin, but you have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. Then being made free from sin, you became the slaves of righteousness." (Romans 6:17, 18). Men today still agree that 'faith only' saves contrary to what Bible teaches. The bible teaches that the gospel of Christ saves (Romans 1:16; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4; Ephesians 1:13) when obeyed (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9). But the modern man says man has nothing to obey! Hence, the conclusion of the Holy writ: "But also if our gospel is hidden, it is hidden to those being lost, in whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving ones, so that the light of the glorious gospel of Christ (who is the image of God) should not dawn on them." (2 Corinthians 4:3,4).

The Gospel as Revealed in the Scriptures

The gospel of Christ as revealed in the scriptures is very simple, straightforward, it is neither burdensome nor wearisome, not confusing but convincing to those who are not lost (2 Corinthians 4:3); because the gospel is hidden only to them that are perishing; for the gospel "...is
hidden to those being lost, in whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving ones, so that the light of the glorious gospel of Christ (who is the image of God) should not dawn on them." (2 Corinthians 4:3,4).

Sin made God drove man out of the Garden of Eden. God has purpose and plan for mankind. He desires the very best for mankind and designed the Garden of Eden and put man there with this command: "…tend and keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, 'of every tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.'" (Genesis 2:15-16).

But Satan came and deceived the first man (Adam) through his wife (Eve) (1 Timothy 2:13, 14) and both of them fell into transgression – sin. The sin brought pronouncement of God, full of curse upon them. God being just, reward all of them. To the serpent; God said "Because you have done this, you are cursed …" (Genesis 3:14-15), to the woman (Eve), He said: "I will greatly multiply your sorrow and conception; in pain you shall bring forth children; your desire shall be for husband, and he shall rule over you" (Genesis 3:16). To the man (Adam) God said: "cursed is the ground for your sake: in toil you shall eat of it … in sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you shall return." (Genesis 3:17-19).

After these pronouncement, God drove the man out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken and "God placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life" (Genesis 3: 23, 24).

Love of God brought the Saviour. In love for mankind, God promised the Saviour: "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He will bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel" (Genesis 3:15). God chose a man by the name of Abraham through whose seed He would bring into the world the One who would be the Saviour of the world. God promised Abraham, "And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed" (Genesis 12:3). From the time this promise was made around 2000 B.C. God had continually reminded His people that there was a "blessing" coming; who would bear the iniquities of the people (Isaiah 53). The promise was not only to the descendants of Abraham, the Jews, but to all families of the earth. It was God's promise to all mankind (every tribe and tongue and people and nation). Peter explained this more clearly on the day of Pentecost that "You are sons of the prophets, and of the covenant that God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham, 'And in your seed will all the families of the earth be blessed.' For you first, God raised up His Servant Jesus and sent Him to bless you by turning every one of you away from your iniquities" (Acts 3:25,26).

The Seed of Abraham that would bless all mankind was JESUS! The blessing was that Jesus would turn us away from our sins. Paul wrote, "Now to Abraham and Blessing Of The Seed his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, 'And to seeds,' as to many, but as of one, 'And to your Seed,' who is Christ" (Galatians 3:16). So the Seed was Jesus Christ. He was the same Seed of woman that God promised would crush the head of Satan after Adam had sinned (Genesis 3:15). He would crush Satan by offering Himself as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. This was the great news of the gospel. "But God commends His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us … we shall be saved from wrath through Him … we shall be saved by His life" (Romans 5:8-11).

Jesus Died to bring man back to God from Satan

Jesus, the Son of God, was crucified on the cross of Calvary for the sins of all people (Hebrews 9:28; 1 John 3:5; cf. 1 Corinthians 5:21, 15:3; 1Peter 2:22). He "bore
our sins in His own body on the tree, so that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness – by whose stripes you were healed" (1 Peter 2:24). Jesus died for all of us! Through His sacrificial death, all men who are obedient to His will can have forgiveness of sins. By the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, he crushed the power of Satan so that people might have an escape route from sin and come back to God through Him. He shed His blood (Hebrews 9:22; 1 Peter 1:18,19. Cf. John 10:18). He was buried in a tomb in order to overcome mankind's problem of physical death, only to be raised by God on the third day after His burial (1 Corinthians 15:4; Acts 2:32), He was raised on Sunday morning from the dead and came forth from the tomb (Mark 16:9).

If modern man would believe that Jesus was raised from the dead, then this belief becomes the foundation upon which the modern man's faith stands that he (the modern man) will be raised in the end (1 Thessalonians 4:14). The fact is, at the return of Jesus, "all who are in graves will hear His voice and come forth ..." (John 5:28, 29). However, only those who have believed on Jesus will be resurrected to life, for only "in Christ" is there hope of resurrection to an immortal state of being (1 Corinthians 15:22). Jesus' resurrection, therefore, is God's answer to the physical death problem of modern man.

Jesus thereafter ascended to heaven (Acts 1:9; Ephesians 1:20-22) to sit at the right hand of God: "who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens" (Hebrews 8:1). Because Jesus is in heaven, Christians "have a Counsellor with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world" (1 John 2:1,2). Jesus is at the right hand of God making intercession for His own – Christians (Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25). He is now King of kings and Lord of lords and has all authority over all things for the benefit of His believers – Christians (Matthew 28:18; 1 Timothy 6:15; Hebrews 1:3).

Jesus is coming again to finalize His victory over death by the resurrection of the righteous from the dead. This is great news for those who have given themselves to Jesus, the Christ. It is bad news, however, for those who have not submitted themselves to Jesus. The disobedient will be raised for destruction when Jesus comes again. Are you looking for the final coming of Jesus? Because of their faith, Christians (those who have obeyed the gospel of Christ without being a member of any denomination) are eagerly "looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God" (2 Peter 3:12). Are you among?

When God sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ to the world, He "did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved (John 3:17). By this, "the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men" (Titus 2:11; Ephesians 2:1-10). This being the truth, when Jesus first came, some people who considered themselves to be religious, did not receive Jesus Christ because they had already rejected the will of God (Mark 7:9). Many people today are best described likewise. Will you also be one of those religious people today to whom Jesus comes, but because of your religious traditions and bigotry reject Him? The grace of God is offered to those who do not know God as well as those who have known Him but had been trapped in the world of man-made (modern) religions. God is calling the modern man out of such vain religions in order to enjoy the freedom of His grace. "'Come out from among them and be ye separate,' says the Lord. 'And do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you'" (2 Corinthians 6:17). That is a command with promise!

What the Modern man should obey to enjoy the Grace of God?

In order for the modern man not to be punished by God on the judgment day, the Holy Spirit sounded the following to warn the modern man and counselled the modern man to "... rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power." (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9). Two things are glaring in this passage: one, Jesus Christ is coming to take vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ (the unbelievers). Two, one must obey the gospel of Jesus Christ in order to escape the coming judgment of Jesus (1Peter 4:17).

The modern man is to believe and obey the gospel event (the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus the Christ) as recorded in the Bible and that the death of Jesus Christ is also for the sins of modern man (1 Corinthians 15:1-4; Mark 1:15) and not for the sins of Himself because He was without sin, He is sinless (1 Corinthians 5:21, 15:3; 1 Peter 2:22; Hebrews 4:15; cf. Hebrews 9:28).

When Peter and other eleven apostles were asked on the day of Pentecost, "men and brethren what shall we do?" Peter answered and said Repent and be baptised, every one of you and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts. 2:36-41; cf. Mark 16:15-16). It is important for the modern man to repent in order to be saved (Luke 13:3, 5). Jesus demanded that those that would be His followers must confess their faith with their mouth (Matthew 10:32, 33; Romans 10:8-10).

In the epistle to the Romans, Paul under the influence of the Holy Spirit wrote to Christians in Rome, and thus reviewed their past obedience to the gospel in chapter 6 beginning with verse 3. "Do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father; even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been joined together in the likeness of His death, we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection; knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be destroyed, that from now on we should not serve sin." In baptism (immersion) we are coming into a spiritual union with Jesus. A covenant is being established. A personal relationship with God is beginning. Because of the seriousness of this teaching, Paul repeats the answer to the question of verse 3 again in verse 5.
For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, we will also be in the likeness of His resurrection. By Baptism (immersion) into Jesus one is united together in the likeness of Jesus' death.
As Jesus went to the tomb almost two thousand years ago, so we can also go to a tomb (grave) of water together with Him today. Subsequently, we are raised with Him in order to walk in newness of life. This is great (good)news!

In baptism (immersion), therefore, you are buried with Jesus. You are also raised with Jesus. In baptism (immersion) one obeys the gospel, which is the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. It's that simple. However, before one goes to the grave with Jesus, he or she must also go to the cross with Jesus. Paul explains this in verse 6. "knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be destroyed, that from now on we should not serve sin." Your old man of greed, selfishness, drunkenness, cheating, lying, spiritual fraud, religious sin, unscriptural worship and practices, innovations and modernisations foreign (strange) to the Bible etc. must die on a cross of self denial with Jesus. Paul wrote concerning his personal crucifixion, "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me ..." (Galatians 2:20). You also must be crucified
with Jesus before you can be buried with Him in the waters of baptism. The Bible says, "Repent, and be immersed every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38).

What would the Modern man obtain if he should obey the Gospel?

It is mandatory for all to hear the gospel (Romans 10:17), believe the gospel, obey it by repentance, confession of faith, and being baptised in water. Having done all these, God would now fulfil His promises which He had promised those who believe. The promises to enjoy includes remission of sins (Acts 2:38); the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38); eternal life (1 John 2:25; 2 Timothy 1:10; Revelation 2:10).

Where Does This Leads To?

Baptism (immersion) is the door that leads one to benefit from the promises of God. By it, one is put into one body – the church: "For also by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free, even all were made to drink into one Spirit." (1 Corinthians 12:13). The body is the church: "And He is the Head of the body, the church, who is the Beginning, the First-born from the dead, that He may be pre-eminent in all things."
(Colossians 1:18, 24). This church is not another denomination or inter-denomination, but the true church, the New Testament church whose head is Jesus (Colossians 1:18, 24). It bears no proper name or human-given names but scriptural names which are descriptive such as: the church of God (1 Corinthians 1:2), the body of Christ (Ephesians 1:22,23), the church of Christ (Romans 16:16), the house of God (1 Timothy 3:15), the flock of God (1 Peter 5:2,3), the bride of Christ (Romans 7:4; Revelation 21:9), the church of the Lord (God) (Acts 20:28), the household of God (Ephesians 2:19), the temple of God (1 Corinthians 3:16).

Individual members do not bear sectarian names such as "ABC Family", "XYZ Communion" but few of the terms that are used in the New Testament to describe members of the body are: Disciples (Acts 11:26), Christians (Acts 11:26; 1 Peter 4:16, cf. Acts 26:28), Saints (Romans 1:7; Ephesians 1:1; Philippians 1:1), Children of God (Romans 8:16; Ephesians 5:8), Sons of God (Galatians 3:26; 1 John 3:1,2), Brethren (Philippians 4:21; 1 Peter 2:17), Servants (Romans 16:1,2), Priests (1 Peter 2:5,9; Revelations 1:6).

Those names that are used in the religious world by modern man that divide brethren (believers) should be discarded and disowned. Those who seek to establish unity among brethren will always give up traditional names in order to base unity among Christians on the principles of the Bible (Ephesians 4:4-6). We must always keep in mind that God did not intend to give a specific name to the church. We want to state humbly that it is wrong to wear names that denominate, as well as belonging to denomination. Denominationalism is sinful (1 Corinthians 1:10-13) and was never in the plan of God. Jesus prayed for the unity of believers (John 26:1-26); Paul scolded Corinthians for allowing the spirit of sectarianism (division, denominationalism); the Holy Spirit foretold division among Christians (Acts 20:28-30) of which we are witnesses. Christians must be united, all who are in division are should repent.

The New Testament church worships in truth and spirit (John 4:23-24) with the following items of worship:

  1. Bible study, teaching and proclamation: "And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ" (Acts 5:42; 2:42; cf. Hebrews 1:1-2). They "went everywhere preaching the word" (Acts 8:4).
  2. Sing Praises To God And Admonish One Another: "speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord" (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16, cf. Acts 2:47). Note the use of the word 'sing'. This is non-instrumental music, it is vocal music (Hebrews 13:15).
  3. Prayer and Fasting: "pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5:17; Acts 2:42). Christians should not be "anxious for anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving" let their requests be made known to God (Philippians 4:6; John 14:13).
  4. Giving/Collection fir the saints and not tithe: I Corinthians 16:1-2; 8:12. This is done on every Lord's Day – Sunday. Christians individually are expected to do good unto all men all days and should even be looking for the opportunity to do so (Galatians 6:9-10). Tithes paying and receiving was for Israelites (Deuteronomy 5:1-5, 14:22) and the law had been nailed to the cross of Christ, done away, and taken out of the way (Colossians 2:14-17; Hebrews 8:7-13; Galatians 3:10, 19, 23-25; 2 Corinthians 3:14-17). Christians are to follow the law of liberty, law of Christ in the New Testament (James 1:25, 2:12). Anyone that pay or receive tithes today is under a curse (Galatians 3:10; 5:4).
  5. Communion: This is also another item of worship that must be done on every Lord's Day – Sunday (Acts 20:7; I Corinthians 11:23-26, Luke 22:16-20).

So, the modern man must believe the gospel of Christ and obey it in order to be saved and be counted among God's own people whom Jesus is coming to take home at the end, worshipping God in truth and in spirit.

Conclusion

The modern man has wondered far away from the Lord despite his technology and science. You are the modern man. Would you risk another day? Please, do not turn your face away from God. He has sent this to you. He wants you to take a bold step of obeying the true gospel today. Kindly accept His grace, come to Jesus Christ in faith, confess your faith in Him, repent and be baptised for the remission of your sins into the body of Christ (church of Christ) and for receiving grace, peace and joy with eternal life as promised by Him. Why not obey Christ now!
