PROVIDING NECESSARY SPIRITUAL HELP FOR OUR CHILDREN IN CAMPUSES

“For I know him, that he will command his children and his household after him, and they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment; that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.” (Genesis 18:19).

A man might be on the whole a good man, and yet be marked by some defect which mars his character and prevents his usefulness or makes him the unintentional cause of much grief. Abraham was not such a man (Genesis 18:19) but Eli was (I Samuel 2:12-36).

Campuses of Higher Institutions of learning today in Nigeria and in fact in all over the world are full with one challenge or the other. These challenges are sometimes referred to as misconducts, disobedience to the constituted authority etc. They are in different sizes, shapes and colour. They include but are not limited to examination malpractices, sexual immorality, cultism, gambling, smoking, sagging, indecent dressing, immodest speeches, committing suicide, etc.

The wondrous and disheartening aspect of the trend is the very fact that those caught in these crime emerge from one home with a father who is expected by the Lord to “command his children and his household after him,” so that “they shall keep the way of the LORD, to do justice and judgment.” (Genesis 18:19, cf. Ephesians 6:3). Further injury is caused when the culprit claimed to be follower of Christ – Christian. It shocks and saddens even the more when the ‘criminal’ is from Elder’s (or Deacon’s, Preacher’s or even leading member’s) home.

The question now is what is the way out? To state that these problems never exist is like a man who deliberately closed his eyes pretending that he is asleep when he himself knows fully well that he is awake.

The Preliminaries

Many parents have left their God-given assignments in pursuit of worldly fame, position, recognition and other things (which war against their souls and that of their children) forgetting that they are sojourners and pilgrims here on earth (cf. 1Peter 2:11; ). The failures are sometimes traceable to the inability of the parent to use scriptural judgment in assisting the children in making lifelong decisions. For example, when there was a fight between the herdsmen of Lot and Abram in Genesis 12, Abram used scriptural principle and judgment when he said unto Lot, "Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren" (vs.8). On the contrary, Lot had forgotten that he was not alone and that he must think and apply God's wisdom and have deep thought about how he would lead his children in the way of the Lord (of which Abram could have been of great assistance to), who should be his in-laws, and the happiness of his daughters thereafter. Like many parents would do today by thinking of money
first, the worldly things first, etc: "And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar. Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other" (vss. 10-11). The rest was story and repercussion of his selfish and ungodly decision. He lost all he had: wife (who looked back and turned pillar of salt), daughters, home, happiness, wealth, son in-laws and all that he had ever worked for (Genesis 19:14-38). So many today are not careful or even careless in choosing where their children would study; all what concerns them is how would they 'make it'; forgetting that there is a way that seemeth right before man, but the end thereof is the way of destruction (Proverb 14:12). Many today have misled their children by choosing for them the best school in academics but the worst in moral and at the end, she became prostitutes and unbeliever even though she left home a Christian!

The Procedures

God had not left us without His words to lead us and guide us (Psalms 119:108; 2 Timothy 3:16). The Holy Bible which is the only book that contains the mind of God had a pattern for the parents on how to provide the necessary spiritual guide, help and assistance to our children in campuses of our higher institutions of learning.

God had given us duties and responsibilities in the home as a way of providing spiritual assistance for our children. Fathers have the duty to perform in bringing their children up in the ways of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). God expected it of Abraham (Genesis 18:19) and commanded Israel to teach their children in the way of the Lord (Deuteronomy 6:6-7). So, it is expected of fathers to provide the kind of leadership Joshua did for his family (Joshua 24:15).

In doing this, God expect from fathers to be patient with their children. Fathers are not to provoke their children to wrath (Ephesians 6:4) and must not be so overbearing as to discourage their children (Colossians 3:21); even though this does not mean that there is never discipline (Hebrews 12:5-11). Fathers are to provide the proper balance between love and discipline.

As parents, God expect us to teach our children from home before they leave for us for higher institutions how to honour their parent, because it is a duty for all children (Ephesians 6:1-2). They are to be informed that Children are to provide for their mothers and grandmothers (1 Timothy 5:4, 16). Failure to teach them all of these will mean preparing them to be unruly and disobedient to constituted authority.

In order to provide necessary assistance for our children in our campuses, there is the need to teach them from home how they should exercise themselves to godliness as Paul charged Timothy (1 Timothy 4:7-8). This involves fleeing some things, while pursuing others (1 Timothy 6:11; 2 Timothy 3:16-17) such as fleeing the love of money and youthful lusts (1 Timothy 6:10; 2 Timothy 2:22; 1 Corinthians 6:18); pursuing righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness (1 Timothy 6:11; 2 Timothy 2:22). In doing these, having been thoroughly grounded, will assist our children to make every effort to be a true child of God in their campuses even when we are several hundreds of kilometres away.

Additionally, we are to teach them how to utilize their God-given gifts (Romans 12:3-6). As a bachelor/spinster, we are to encourage them to be an example to other Christians. Remember, this was/is the charge given to Timothy, who was single (1 Timothy 4:12), likewise to Titus (Titus 2:7), even as Paul did himself (1 Thessalonians 2:10). We are to teach them to remember their creator in the days of their youth when they can use their freedom for the Lord. Paul wrote that the unmarried can do more for the Lord (1 Corinthians 7:32-34) because they do not have spousal and parental duties.

Many parents are fond of saying "we are praying for them (their wards)" who they have not taught the Words of Life. Matthew Henry, wrote (when he was commenting on Genesis 18:19) that Abraham "not only prayed with his family, but he taught them as a man of knowledge, nay, he commanded them as a man in authority, and was prophet and king, as well as priest, in his own house…" (emphasis, KSA). In order to assist these kids when they get to the campuses of higher learning in this perverse world which had been drunk with all evils and wickedness of the highest order, it is the duty of parents to teach them the way of the Lord and then pray with and for them.

The purpose

The Bible clearly stated that parents should "Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it." Reading through Ecclesiastes 11:9 through 12:1, the wise man stated reasons and purposes for providing necessary spiritual help for our children. Among them are:

1. The Youth has no guarantee of the future. Death has no respect for age, he strikes and kill any irrespective of the age. This is so because life itself is a vapour (James 4:14-17). Secondly, the Lord is coming in judgment and all must be prepared to meet Him (2 Peter 3:7, 9-11; 2 Thessalonians 1:7-9). Parents are to supply the necessary aids and assistance to these children in and outside their homes and domains.
   
2. Misspent youth can curse future life. The eternal law of sowing is still there: whatever you sow, you shall reap (Galatians 1:7-9), and there is danger in sowing the wild coats (Hosea 8:7), such as sowing the seeds of rebellion against parents when not rebuked, will germinated to rebellion against the constituted authority which will results in "carrying placards", participating in destructive and violence demonstration, stealing and the rest that goes along with it. Other seeds in this line included but not limited to lying, fornication, drug abuse and alcohol.
   

When parents inculcate into their children the necessity of remembering their creator all the days of their life, it is an effort in the right direction of providing the required spiritual assistance to them, this is so because the Bible declared that "Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying." (Proverbs 18:19).

The Pattern

The parents are to teach the whole truth to their children while they are with them at home and when they have gone to the higher institution for academic pursuit. There are lots of issues we must discussed at home level and teach very well to our children before they move to higher institutions where the will start to mix with 'all' philosophers of this world who had been given to errors and unsound doctrines whose eye of understanding had been darkened (Ephesians 4:17-19). Few of them are as listed below:

Teach about:

1. Creation. Teach your child that Biblical story of creation is a reality and not chance! We are made in the image of God. Hence, all men are as a result of intelligent design and eternal purpose of God (Genesis 1-3; Ephesians 1); we are spiritual not alien (Acts 17:28), God is the Father of our spirits (Hebrews 12:9; Genesis 1:26; Matthew 10:28-29; Ecclesiastes 3:11).
   
2. The Bible as the Word of God. Enforce daily reading of the Bible (Psalms 119:11; 2 Timothy 2:15). Let them see that the Bible contains commandments of God and not suggestions or opinions of men (Hebrews 2:1-3a; 10:28, 29).
   
3. The New Testament Church. Let them see from the Bible that there is just only one church (Ephesians 4:4; Colossians 1:18, 24). Jesus died for the church to purchased it with His precious blood (Acts 20:28) and only those that are saved are members of the church (Acts 2:47), and that there are none who are saved that are not in it (Ephesians 5:23-27). Against what religious teachers and lecturers would teach and say such as "Join the church of your choice", the choice has already been made regarding the church. We are to teach them that our choice is the same as that of Joshua, who said: "Choose you this day whom ye will serve…" (Joshua 24:15). Make it clear that if they choose to serve Christ (which they must), they must choose His church(Ephesians 4:4-6; Matthew 16:16-18; Colossians 1:13, 18, 24).
   
4. There are wicked people in the world. Let them know before they got out there that there are wicked people around in the world and most often among the closest friends. It may be hard to accept but teach them to be aware that in the world some of those who are enjoyable could be wicked, evil or even bad. Parents are responsible to let their children know about the warnings of the Bible concerning making friends with wicked and evil people (1 Corinthians 15:33; Proverbs 25:17; 1:10-19; Judges 16:1-20; 2 Samuel 11:; 13:1-5; Matthew 26:48,49). Teach that truth and righteousness may cause a separation between childhood friends as they become adults (Matthew 10:34-40; Luke 12:51-53). Teach them to beware but be friendly (1 Corinthians 13; cf. John 2:23-25; Matthew 10:16).
   
5. God hates Divorce. Do not say they are young and that they can not comprehend. In this age of Computer, internet and technology it will surprise you that they are exposed to all kinds of dangers which they consider to be enjoyable not knowing that it would be for a season (Hebrews 11:25). If you really want and desire to assist them spiritually, you need to teach them repeatedly that God "hate putting away" (Malachi 2:16). Divorce is not God's desired purpose for man in marriage (Genesis 3:22-24). Make it clear that anytime a divorce occurs somebody had already sinned and probably continuing in sin until repentance (Matthew 5:32; 19:1-11; Luke 16:18; Mark 10:2-12; I Corinthians 7:1-16). Divorce negatively impacts a lot of people such as children, parents, affected couple, new partner that would be remarried, friends to the affected couple, the church and the nation. Teach your children to learn how to be committed when it is ripe for them to make a choice in the Lord concerning whom to marry.
   
6. Baptism is important to salvation. Sound it loud that one can not be saved without water baptism (Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15, 16; 1 Peter 3:21; Galatians 3:26, 27; Ephesians 5:23-26). Explain that baptism puts believers into Christ where remission of sins is (Romans 6:3-4; Acts 2:38; Matthew 26:28; 1 Corinthians 12:13) and that the baptized believer is under obligation to God to live right and conform himself unto the examples of Christ Jesus ( 1 Corinthians 11:1; Romans 6:1-11).
   
7. Sin is black, Hell is hot and Eternity is forever. Let them know from time to time that there is no such thing as little sin or white lies (1 John 1:6-10; Revelations 21:8). Let them see from the pages of the scriptures that God does not fellowship with impenitent sinner (Isaiah 59:1,2; 1 John 1:6) and will punish sin and the issue of hell is not just another fairy tale (Mark 9:44-48; Matthew 25:44-46; Romans 2:5-11; 6:23).
   
8. Integrity, honesty, respect for authority, moral courage and excellence (Romans 12:17; 2 Corinthians 13:7; 1 Peter 2:12). All are to be honest with God, His Word, Jesus Christ and His church (Number 32:23; John 12:48) and be honest with ourselves and be honest to other fellow colleagues (1 Peter 3:10; Proverbs 11:9). Be honest to teachers and Parents (Galatians 4:1-2; Ephesians 6:1; Romans 13:1, 2; Leviticus 19:32; Matthew 8:5-10). Our youth in our campuses are to be brave and ready to resist all influences that come their ways to lead them into sins. They are to be aware and be properly guided in the Bible that they will face challenges which they must confront with moral courage. These include modesty (1Timothy 2:9,10; 1 Peter 3:1-6; Proverbs 2:10); alcohol and drugs (1 Peter 4:1-4; Proverbs 23:29-35); dance (Galatians 5:21); Gangs (Proverbs 1:10-19); Charles Darwin's theory of evolution and humanism (Psalms 14:1; Romans 1:20); sex education and fornication (campus couple, 'aristo') (Matthew 19:1-12; Genesis 2:24-26; 1 Corinthians 7:1-5).
   

The Plea

Brethren, it is time for all of us to rise to the challenge of assisting our youth to know why we believe what we believe and we need to assist them in putting them through in all the ways that would make them a true disciples of Christ and a worthy ambassadors of Christ in their campuses and not to be a ready species and victim in the hands of wolves in our campuses.

This we must do because we are under obligation to God to do so and remain faithful just like Abraham did!

THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST TO THE MODERN MAN

Introduction

Virtually in the world today, there is nothing important and valuable that had not been forged by modern man. However, it is incredible to note that modern man with all his knowledge, scientific breakthrough, super technology and his quintessential abilities still embraces that which is inferior, fake and of little or no value. It is sad to observe further that this is not limited to physical/material things but also to spiritual things; even matters of salvation of soul.

The Gospel as understood by the Modern Man

To the modern man, several gospel of Christ are in existence and acceptable to him. It leans towards several directions which can be broadly grouped into orthodox, Pentecostal, protestant, and the new millennium gospel. This classification is easy to identify if one is acquainted with the prevailing doctrines of a particular group/sect/division/denomination. What is confusing in the whole matter is that all of these groups do lay claim to the Bible as their source of authority. Despite the fact that the Bible did not contain any contradictory teaching, yet the modern man held on tightly to different and contradictory and sometimes conflicting doctrines; this is equally amazing and disturbing to a sincere seeker of the truth.

Today, the modern man accepts, embraces and teaches that Jesus Christ is not the end of the Law and wants to see it taught in Matthew 5:17-18. Meanwhile, the Bible clearly teaches that Jesus is the end of the Law. "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone that believeth." (Romans 10:4; cf. Galatians 5:4; Ephesians 2:12-17). To the mind of the modern man, there are many mediators (prophets); yet the Holy Bible declared that there is just only one mediator, Jesus Christ (1 Timothy 2:5). In the opinions and views of the modern man, Jesus reconciles God to man which is contrary to the teachings of the Bible which says "Now all these things are from God, who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that God was in Christ reconciling the world to Himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and He has committed to us the word of reconciliation." (2 Corinthians 5: 18, 19; NASV).

Modern man teaches that Jesus Christ would save anyone who profess faith (Luke 6:46) forgetting that this group will include devils because "… the devils also believe, and tremble." (James 2:19). Contrary to this teaching of the modern man, the only book that contained the mind of God – the Bible says "…gospel … is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek." (Romans 1:16). The modern man believes that God saves some from all churches (the denominations/sects), while the Bible teaches that Jesus Christ is the saviour of the body, the only true church (1 Corinthians 12:12; Ephesians 5:23) which is just one and has its authority in the Bible only (Matthew 16:16-18, Ephesians 4:4; Colossians 1:13, 18, 24).

The modern man understood the gospel of Christ as containing the doctrines of men as he teaches for doctrine the commandments of men (Matthew 15:8,9) which includes direct calling (against the only gospel call available today – 2 Thessalonians 2:14), vision telling (contrary to how God speaks to man today, through Lord Jesus Christ – Hebrews 1:1-2), celebration of feasts, festival which had no scriptural precedence (no Bible passage to support the practice – practices that were never engaged in by the first century Christians) such as Easter, Christmas, Bazzar, etc.

In the understanding of the modern man, one can be freed through praying (1 Peter 3:12), which is contrary to the teaching of Holy Spirit who said one is freed by his obedience to the gospel of Christ (form of doctrine) "But thanks be to our God that you were the slaves of sin, but you have obeyed from the heart that form of doctrine to which you were delivered. Then being made free from sin, you became the slaves of righteousness." (Romans 6:17, 18). Men today still agree that 'faith only' saves contrary to what Bible teaches. The bible teaches that the gospel of Christ saves (Romans 1:16; 1 Corinthians 15:1-4; Ephesians 1:13) when obeyed (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9). But the modern man says man has nothing to obey! Hence, the conclusion of the Holy writ: "But also if our gospel is hidden, it is hidden to those being lost, in whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving ones, so that the light of the glorious gospel of Christ (who is the image of God) should not dawn on them." (2 Corinthians 4:3,4).

The Gospel as Revealed in the Scriptures

The gospel of Christ as revealed in the scriptures is very simple, straightforward, it is neither burdensome nor wearisome, not confusing but convincing to those who are not lost (2 Corinthians 4:3); because the gospel is hidden only to them that are perishing; for the gospel "...is
hidden to those being lost, in whom the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving ones, so that the light of the glorious gospel of Christ (who is the image of God) should not dawn on them." (2 Corinthians 4:3,4).

Sin made God drove man out of the Garden of Eden. God has purpose and plan for mankind. He desires the very best for mankind and designed the Garden of Eden and put man there with this command: "…tend and keep it. And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, 'of every tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.'" (Genesis 2:15-16).

But Satan came and deceived the first man (Adam) through his wife (Eve) (1 Timothy 2:13, 14) and both of them fell into transgression – sin. The sin brought pronouncement of God, full of curse upon them. God being just, reward all of them. To the serpent; God said "Because you have done this, you are cursed …" (Genesis 3:14-15), to the woman (Eve), He said: "I will greatly multiply your sorrow and conception; in pain you shall bring forth children; your desire shall be for husband, and he shall rule over you" (Genesis 3:16). To the man (Adam) God said: "cursed is the ground for your sake: in toil you shall eat of it … in sweat of your face you shall eat bread till you return to the ground, for out of it you were taken; for dust you are, and to dust you shall return." (Genesis 3:17-19).

After these pronouncement, God drove the man out of the garden of Eden to till the ground from which he was taken and "God placed cherubim at the east of the garden of Eden, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to guard the way to the tree of life" (Genesis 3: 23, 24).

Love of God brought the Saviour. In love for mankind, God promised the Saviour: "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He will bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel" (Genesis 3:15). God chose a man by the name of Abraham through whose seed He would bring into the world the One who would be the Saviour of the world. God promised Abraham, "And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed" (Genesis 12:3). From the time this promise was made around 2000 B.C. God had continually reminded His people that there was a "blessing" coming; who would bear the iniquities of the people (Isaiah 53). The promise was not only to the descendants of Abraham, the Jews, but to all families of the earth. It was God's promise to all mankind (every tribe and tongue and people and nation). Peter explained this more clearly on the day of Pentecost that "You are sons of the prophets, and of the covenant that God made with our fathers, saying to Abraham, 'And in your seed will all the families of the earth be blessed.' For you first, God raised up His Servant Jesus and sent Him to bless you by turning every one of you away from your iniquities" (Acts 3:25,26).

The Seed of Abraham that would bless all mankind was JESUS! The blessing was that Jesus would turn us away from our sins. Paul wrote, "Now to Abraham and Blessing Of The Seed his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, 'And to seeds,' as to many, but as of one, 'And to your Seed,' who is Christ" (Galatians 3:16). So the Seed was Jesus Christ. He was the same Seed of woman that God promised would crush the head of Satan after Adam had sinned (Genesis 3:15). He would crush Satan by offering Himself as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. This was the great news of the gospel. "But God commends His love toward us in that while we were yet sinners Christ died for us … we shall be saved from wrath through Him … we shall be saved by His life" (Romans 5:8-11).

Jesus Died to bring man back to God from Satan

Jesus, the Son of God, was crucified on the cross of Calvary for the sins of all people (Hebrews 9:28; 1 John 3:5; cf. 1 Corinthians 5:21, 15:3; 1Peter 2:22). He "bore
our sins in His own body on the tree, so that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness – by whose stripes you were healed" (1 Peter 2:24). Jesus died for all of us! Through His sacrificial death, all men who are obedient to His will can have forgiveness of sins. By the death of Jesus Christ on the cross, he crushed the power of Satan so that people might have an escape route from sin and come back to God through Him. He shed His blood (Hebrews 9:22; 1 Peter 1:18,19. Cf. John 10:18). He was buried in a tomb in order to overcome mankind's problem of physical death, only to be raised by God on the third day after His burial (1 Corinthians 15:4; Acts 2:32), He was raised on Sunday morning from the dead and came forth from the tomb (Mark 16:9).

If modern man would believe that Jesus was raised from the dead, then this belief becomes the foundation upon which the modern man's faith stands that he (the modern man) will be raised in the end (1 Thessalonians 4:14). The fact is, at the return of Jesus, "all who are in graves will hear His voice and come forth ..." (John 5:28, 29). However, only those who have believed on Jesus will be resurrected to life, for only "in Christ" is there hope of resurrection to an immortal state of being (1 Corinthians 15:22). Jesus' resurrection, therefore, is God's answer to the physical death problem of modern man.

Jesus thereafter ascended to heaven (Acts 1:9; Ephesians 1:20-22) to sit at the right hand of God: "who is seated at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens" (Hebrews 8:1). Because Jesus is in heaven, Christians "have a Counsellor with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only, but also for the whole world" (1 John 2:1,2). Jesus is at the right hand of God making intercession for His own – Christians (Romans 8:34; Hebrews 7:25). He is now King of kings and Lord of lords and has all authority over all things for the benefit of His believers – Christians (Matthew 28:18; 1 Timothy 6:15; Hebrews 1:3).

Jesus is coming again to finalize His victory over death by the resurrection of the righteous from the dead. This is great news for those who have given themselves to Jesus, the Christ. It is bad news, however, for those who have not submitted themselves to Jesus. The disobedient will be raised for destruction when Jesus comes again. Are you looking for the final coming of Jesus? Because of their faith, Christians (those who have obeyed the gospel of Christ without being a member of any denomination) are eagerly "looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God" (2 Peter 3:12). Are you among?

When God sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ to the world, He "did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved (John 3:17). By this, "the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men" (Titus 2:11; Ephesians 2:1-10). This being the truth, when Jesus first came, some people who considered themselves to be religious, did not receive Jesus Christ because they had already rejected the will of God (Mark 7:9). Many people today are best described likewise. Will you also be one of those religious people today to whom Jesus comes, but because of your religious traditions and bigotry reject Him? The grace of God is offered to those who do not know God as well as those who have known Him but had been trapped in the world of man-made (modern) religions. God is calling the modern man out of such vain religions in order to enjoy the freedom of His grace. "'Come out from among them and be ye separate,' says the Lord. 'And do not touch what is unclean, and I will receive you'" (2 Corinthians 6:17). That is a command with promise!

What the Modern man should obey to enjoy the Grace of God?

In order for the modern man not to be punished by God on the judgment day, the Holy Spirit sounded the following to warn the modern man and counselled the modern man to "... rest with us when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with His mighty angels, in flaming fire taking vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ. These shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power." (2 Thessalonians 1:7-9). Two things are glaring in this passage: one, Jesus Christ is coming to take vengeance on those who do not know God, and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ (the unbelievers). Two, one must obey the gospel of Jesus Christ in order to escape the coming judgment of Jesus (1Peter 4:17).

The modern man is to believe and obey the gospel event (the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus the Christ) as recorded in the Bible and that the death of Jesus Christ is also for the sins of modern man (1 Corinthians 15:1-4; Mark 1:15) and not for the sins of Himself because He was without sin, He is sinless (1 Corinthians 5:21, 15:3; 1 Peter 2:22; Hebrews 4:15; cf. Hebrews 9:28).

When Peter and other eleven apostles were asked on the day of Pentecost, "men and brethren what shall we do?" Peter answered and said Repent and be baptised, every one of you and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts. 2:36-41; cf. Mark 16:15-16). It is important for the modern man to repent in order to be saved (Luke 13:3, 5). Jesus demanded that those that would be His followers must confess their faith with their mouth (Matthew 10:32, 33; Romans 10:8-10).

In the epistle to the Romans, Paul under the influence of the Holy Spirit wrote to Christians in Rome, and thus reviewed their past obedience to the gospel in chapter 6 beginning with verse 3. "Do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him by baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father; even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been joined together in the likeness of His death, we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection; knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be destroyed, that from now on we should not serve sin." In baptism (immersion) we are coming into a spiritual union with Jesus. A covenant is being established. A personal relationship with God is beginning. Because of the seriousness of this teaching, Paul repeats the answer to the question of verse 3 again in verse 5.
For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, we will also be in the likeness of His resurrection. By Baptism (immersion) into Jesus one is united together in the likeness of Jesus' death. As Jesus went to the tomb almost two thousand years ago, so we can also go to a tomb (grave) of water together with Him today. Subsequently, we are raised with Him in order to walk in newness of life. This is great (good)news!

In baptism (immersion), therefore, you are buried with Jesus. You are also raised with Jesus. In baptism (immersion) one obeys the gospel, which is the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus. It's that simple. However, before one goes to the grave with Jesus, he or she must also go to the cross with Jesus. Paul explains this in verse 6. "knowing this, that our old man is crucified with Him in order that the body of sin might be destroyed, that from now on we should not serve sin." Your old man of greed, selfishness, drunkenness, cheating, lying, spiritual fraud, religious sin, unscriptural worship and practices, innovations and modernisations foreign (strange) to the Bible etc. must die on a cross of self denial with Jesus. Paul wrote concerning his personal crucifixion, "I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me ..." (Galatians 2:20). You also must be crucified
with Jesus before you can be buried with Him in the waters of baptism. The Bible says, "Repent, and be immersed every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 2:38).

What would the Modern man obtain if he should obey the Gospel?

It is mandatory for all to hear the gospel (Romans 10:17), believe the gospel, obey it by repentance, confession of faith, and being baptised in water. Having done all these, God would now fulfil His promises which He had promised those who believe. The promises to enjoy includes remission of sins (Acts 2:38); the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38); eternal life (1 John 2:25; 2 Timothy 1:10; Revelation 2:10).

 

Where Does This Leads To?

Baptism (immersion) is the door that leads one to benefit from the promises of God. By it, one is put into one body – the church: "For also by one Spirit we are all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether bond or free, even all were made to drink into one Spirit." (1 Corinthians 12:13). The body is the church: "And He is the Head of the body, the church, who is the Beginning, the First-born from the dead, that He may be pre-eminent in all things."
(Colossians 1:18, 24). This church is not another denomination or inter-denomination, but the true church, the New Testament church whose head is Jesus (Colossians 1:18, 24). It bears no proper name or human-given names but scriptural names which are descriptive such as: the church of God (1 Corinthians 1:2), the body of Christ (Ephesians 1:22,23), the church of Christ (Romans 16:16), the house of God (1 Timothy 3:15), the flock of God (1 Peter 5:2,3), the bride of Christ (Romans 7:4; Revelation 21:9), the church of the Lord (God) (Acts 20:28), the household of God (Ephesians 2:19), the temple of God (1 Corinthians 3:16).

Individual members do not bear sectarian names such as "ABC Family", "XYZ Communion" but few of the terms that are used in the New Testament to describe members of the body are: Disciples (Acts 11:26), Christians (Acts 11:26; 1 Peter 4:16, cf. Acts 26:28), Saints (Romans 1:7; Ephesians 1:1; Philippians 1:1), Children of God (Romans 8:16; Ephesians 5:8), Sons of God (Galatians 3:26; 1 John 3:1,2), Brethren (Philippians 4:21; 1 Peter 2:17), Servants (Romans 16:1,2), Priests (1 Peter 2:5,9; Revelations 1:6).

Those names that are used in the religious world by modern man that divide brethren (believers) should be discarded and disowned. Those who seek to establish unity among brethren will always give up traditional names in order to base unity among Christians on the principles of the Bible (Ephesians 4:4-6). We must always keep in mind that God did not intend to give a specific name to the church. We want to state humbly that it is wrong to wear names that denominate, as well as belonging to denomination. Denominationalism is sinful (1 Corinthians 1:10-13) and was never in the plan of God. Jesus prayed for the unity of believers (John 26:1-26); Paul scolded Corinthians for allowing the spirit of sectarianism (division, denominationalism); the Holy Spirit foretold division among Christians (Acts 20:28-30) of which we are witnesses. Christians must be united, all who are in division are should repent.

The New Testament church worships in truth and spirit (John 4:23-24) with the following items of worship:

1. Bible study, teaching and proclamation: "And daily in the temple, and in every house, they did not cease teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ" (Acts 5:42; 2:42; cf. Hebrews 1:1-2). They "went everywhere preaching the word" (Acts 8:4).
   
2. Sing Praises To God And Admonish One Another: "speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord" (Ephesians 5:19; Colossians 3:16, cf. Acts 2:47). Note the use of the word 'sing'. This is non-instrumental music, it is vocal music (Hebrews 13:15).
   
3. Prayer and Fasting: "pray without ceasing" (1 Thessalonians 5:17; Acts 2:42). Christians should not be "anxious for anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving" let their requests be made known to God (Philippians 4:6; John 14:13).
   
4. Giving/Collection fir the saints and not tithe: I Corinthians 16:1-2; 8:12. This is done on every Lord's Day – Sunday. Christians individually are expected to do good unto all men all days and should even be looking for the opportunity to do so (Galatians 6:9-10). Tithes paying and receiving was for Israelites (Deuteronomy 5:1-5, 14:22) and the law had been nailed to the cross of Christ, done away, and taken out of the way (Colossians 2:14-17; Hebrews 8:7-13; Galatians 3:10, 19, 23-25; 2 Corinthians 3:14-17). Christians are to follow the law of liberty, law of Christ in the New Testament (James 1:25, 2:12). Anyone that pay or receive tithes today is under a curse (Galatians 3:10; 5:4).
   
5. Communion: This is also another item of worship that must be done on every Lord's Day – Sunday (Acts 20:7; I Corinthians 11:23-26, Luke 22:16-20).
   

So, the modern man must believe the gospel of Christ and obey it in order to be saved and be counted among God's own people whom Jesus is coming to take home at the end, worshipping God in truth and in spirit.

Conclusion

The modern man has wondered far away from the Lord despite his technology and science. You are the modern man. Would you risk another day? Please, do not turn your face away from God. He has sent this to you. He wants you to take a bold step of obeying the true gospel today. Kindly accept His grace, come to Jesus Christ in faith, confess your faith in Him, repent and be baptised for the remission of your sins into the body of Christ (church of Christ) and for receiving grace, peace and joy with eternal life as promised by Him. Why not obey Christ now!

"For You Are All One In Christ Jesus"

The Holy Spirit, speaking the mind of God, through the mouth of Paul said "For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put en Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female: for you are all one in Christ Jesus" (Gal. 3:26-28). Some today have allowed the doctrine of Satan to enter their heads by taking 'all' to be 'one' just like that. They think that once a person becomes a member of the church, he is now at par with all in the church, even with elders, deacons, preachers, teachers, parents and older brethren. I think this is wrong because this view runs contrary to other passages of the scripture. Please, let us consider the following points.

1. WHEN ARE ALL NOT ONE IN CHRIST JESUS?
   

1. We are all one in the common salvation: In all
   matters of religion, Jesus Christ commands that "But you, do not be called 'Rabbi'; for One is your Teacher, the Christ, and you are all brethren. Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father, He who is in heaven" (Matthew 23:8-9). Jesus here condemns all sorts of religious titles hence, it will be wrong for a Christian to be addressed as 'Elder So and So' or 'Deacon, Dr. X or Y' or as 'Evangelist or Teacher or Preacher Goat or Ram' but hear Jesus, "you are brethren."
   In all matters of faith and our stand before God, we are all one. We are all saved through same process. In this regard we are all the same because by the blood of Jesus we are all drawn nigh unto God. (Gal. 3:28-29; Jude 3; Eph. 2:13). Search the New Testament for cases of conversion, it may interest you to discover that all who ever became Christians took the simple steps to salvation; and this is hearing of the gospel (Rom. 10:17); believing the gospel (Rom. 10:8-9); confessing Christ as the Son of God and Lord (Acts 8:36, Rom. 10: 8-10); repentance of one's sins (Luke 13:3, 5; Acts 2:38); and the last step is baptism into the body of Christ (Mark 16:15-16; Acts 2:38; 1 Pet. 3:21; 1 Cor. 12:13). So in this regard we are all one.
   
2. We are all one in the coming judgment: In the coming judgement we are all one, we are going to receive judgment same way because with God there is no partiality, He is no respecter of persons (Acts 10:34-35). As an elder will stand before the judgment seat of Christ so also a new convert. An old preacher will stand to receive judgment, so will a young preacher. The Holy Spirit declares this verdict when He said in 2 Corinthians 5:10 that "For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body according to what he has done, whether good or bad". God will not exempt you from the coming judgment because you believed yesterday and today is judgment day! Brother we are going to be judged same way; hence we are all one in this respect.
   
3. We are all one in our stand before God, Christ, and the Holy Spirit: During the Old Testament era, the stands of Jews are quite different from that of the Gentiles. A distinction is made between a man and a woman. A slave was not at par with the free born, but under the New Testament period, the Holy Spirit declared "whether free or bond, male or female, Jews or Greek, are all one" (Gal. 3:28-29; Rom. 10:12).
   

   
    

   1. WHEN ARE ALL ONE IN CHRIST JESUS?
      

But are we all one in all ramifications? Let the bible answer this question.

1. In the Church at Jerusalem: Reading from Acts 5, we notice that there is a group of apostles unto which the other brethren referred to whenever a decision was to be taken. I want to suggest to you that if they are all one, in all ramifications, there wouldn't be any reason for any to sell their property and bring the proceeds to the feet of the apostles. Why not to the feet of the individuals? The reason is that all are not apostles. The apostles were to lead while others were to follow their footstep as they (apostles) followed Christ (1 Cor. 15:1; Eph.2:20; ICor. 12:29,30).
   
2. In Acts 15: We read of the meeting that was held at Jerusalem where the apostles, elders, and brethren were present. You only need to ask a question: Who were those that contributed to the decision of the church in that gathering? You want to think on this? Yes, you will discover that it was only the apostles that spoke not even the elders except James. What were the others doing in the meeting? They only played a silent role. Learning at apostles' feet and waiting for their own time. It is needful to state here that it is a wrong altitude for the brethren to be slighting others while contributing to an issue in any meeting of the saints not minding whom they are speaking to. When some are expected to play a silent role all because we are all Christians, they also wish to be heard and they thereby fall into the trap of Satan by becoming insolent, rude, disrespectful, and unguarded in their speeches and utterances. Brethren, won't we learn from this principle? Definitely, the brethren that gathered in Acts 15 were not all the same, in all ramifications. In 1 Tim. 5:1-3, Paul instructed Timothy, a young preacher on how to treat different kinds of people in the Church. How is this Preacher to relate with older brethren? The Bible says "as Fathers". In our culture, a young man is to treat his father with all respect, so this preacher is expected to treat older brethren with a deserving respect. In the same vein, he is to treat older women "as mothers", younger men "as brethren" and younger women "as sisters with all purity". Brethren, this is the word of God. We are not, in all ramifications, the same as some will want us to believe and thereby giving chances for Satan to overtake them.
   

 

CONCLUSION

Brethren, it is high time we sensitised ourselves with this salient fact. A preacher is to be treated as a preacher. They are to be respected, they are not to be spoken to just any how all because we are Christians. In the same way, older men and women are expected to be respected. It will amount to sin on anyone's part to disrespect an older man or woman in the church, even when they are caught in an offence, God still gives them certain "immunity". The Bible says we should not rebuke them but to exhort them as fathers in the spirit of humility (1 Tim.5:1, 19; Gal. 6:1). Not to talk of the appointed elders, they are to be treated with all respect due to them (Heb. l3:17; l Tim.5:17; 1 Thess. 5:12-14).

We should not be guilty of what Peter described in 2 Peter 2:10-21. "But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government. Presumptuous are they, self willed, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities.... But these, ... speak evil of the things that they understand not; and shall utterly perish in their own corruption; And shall receive the reward of unrighteousness, ... cursed children: Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray,... These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest; to whom the mist of darkness is reserved forever..."

Scriptural Marriage, Traditional Customs and Civil Laws – 2

This is the second part of the series on Marriage, Traditional customs and Civil laws. In the first part (we encourage the reader to read the first part before continuing with this), we discussed what scriptural marriage is. We also highlighted the fact that marriage is a covenant with all its components.

T

he terms of agreement of marriage are stated by God Himself Who designed it: "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife, and they shall be one flesh" (Gen. 2:24). That it was God who made this proclamation is evidenced by our Lord Jesus in Matt. 19:4-5. According to the Designer of marriage, the two parties involved are the man and his wife.

Leave - The agreement between the two is: to leave father and mother. L. A. Stauffer states this so beautifully: "Leaving one's original family is a decisive action... Jesus used an intensive form of the word "leave." The word (kataleipo) means "to forsake completely," or "to abandon." Abandonment of father and mother in no way annuls the responsibility to honor one's parents, but does underscore the need to renounce totally the rule and place of subjection once occupied in that family. A definite and final break is to be made between the new family and the two families from which the couple came. Fathers and mothers must not be permitted to interfere, regulate, dominate or control the marriages of their children."³ This is rule number one.

Cleave - A male and female must cleave to
one another. The idea here is "to glue or weld together" and this emphasizes the marriage vow or promise. This implies acceptance of the oneness in marriage and a commitment to that union. This is rule number two in the marriage covenant.

 

Unite in One Flesh
- The final action of marriage, "they shall be one flesh." L. A. Stauffer notes: "the uniting of the two bodies as 'one flesh' is a fitting expression of the intimacy, boundless sharing, and total merging that marriage demands of a male and a female." This is the point where marriage covenant is ratified. That is the seal of ratification.

Another point that calls for emphasis here is the fact that it is God Himself, the Author of marriage, that does the joining of a male and a female together. When parents or the officers of the State, or preachers or Chairmen of marriage ceremonies (or marriage receptions) proclaim that newly wedded couples are joined together, it should be understood that that joining at that level is merely ceremonial. The true, real, and authentic joining together is done by God when all of the commitments of marriage are fulfilled. "What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder (Matt. 19:6).

This is marriage according to the will of God. Every traditional custom of man or civil law is subordinate to this divine law.

Applying the Principles

When a man who has the God-given right to marry hooks a woman who equally has the right to marry, God joins them together in holy wedlock. It does not matter whether one is a believer and the other is an infidel (1 Cor. 7:12-16). The marriage is right and Scriptural. The practice of some local churches withdrawing fellowship from their members for contracting marriages with non-believers is, by its very nature, anti-scriptural. The absurdity of the practice should be very obvious even to the obtuse. Sin demands repentance (Acts 17:30). Repentance on the other hand calls for cessation of sin (Matt. 3:8; 1 Cor. 6:9-11; Acts 14:15). Now, if it is outright sinful for a Christian to marry a non-Christian, doesn't the repentance of that "sin" call for the sending away of the non-believing spouse? Then, in that case, one would be doing the very thing the Lord has condemned - causing the wife (or the husband) who is a non-believer to commit adultery. "But I say unto you, that whosoever shall put away his wife saving for the cause of fornication causeth her to commit adultery..." (Matt. 5:32). Could language be plainer?

But then a caveat! This is not said to encourage Christians to marry non-believers. It is a blatant demonstration of bad attitude and poor judgment for a child of God to even contemplate marrying a child of the devil - for that is what a non-believer is (1 Jn. 3:8). It is when a person is converted that he is translated into the kingdom of God's dear Son (Col. 1:12-13).

Moreover, it has been said over and over again that a marriage will be more harmonious and peaceful if the man and the woman making up the home are equals. That is, if they are suited to each other socially, culturally and more importantly, spiritually. In this way, they share the goals of life, aspirations, joys and sorrows together; and work together to build an atmosphere in which they rear their children and fight the storms of life together. To the extent that they are not united, the home is threatened. The Lord says, "... if a house be divided against itself, that house cannot stand" (Mk.3:25).

If in the process of marriage idolatry, drunkenness and other sins are committed, it is these sins that should be rebuked and repented of (1 Cor. 10:14; 6:9-10; Gal. 5:19-21). Idolatry or drunkenness does not, and would not, invalidate the marriage. The marriage itself is holy and sacrosanct if the persons involved are eligible to marry.

Some traditional customs would not recognize a marriage even after that marriage has produced "a football team" of children. A scenario is this: A man decided to marry. He approached his proposed in-laws for the hands of their daughter in marriage. He was presented with a list of requirements including dowry and or, bride-price. He pleaded with his in-laws (to-be) to release his proposed wife to him with a promise to come back later to settle those requirements. The in-laws acquiesced and blessed the young man together with the young lady and thus another family was established. After nine months, children started to arrive and with this development came additional responsibilities. This was a man who did not "have much of this world's goods," including education and exposure; about the only possession he thought he had was his wife; who doubled as his "only" consolation and the only form of recreation he knew was mating and mating! (Sex is a God-given right and it's beautiful within the framework of lawful marriage - 1 Cor. 7:2-5). As it should be expected in a man with this mind set, this translated to more and more children until he "hath his quiver full of them!" Coping with the problems of life and living became the major preoccupation of our man so much so that he became totally oblivious of the promise he made to his in-laws at the point of his marriage. Then, the eldest of the children his own marriage had produced was ready to introduce a man who had proposed marriage to her. It was at this stage that our man remembered that his wife and his children were not yet his own on the ground that he had not paid the dowry or bride-price on his wife!!!

If the woman that has produced these children is not this man's wife, then, certain questions are crying for answers and the most fundamental of these is: is this man married to this woman? If they were not married, then, what have they been doing all along by living together and producing children? If they were not married, then, they have been living in fornication and all the children produced by the union were born in fornication and out wedlock (Col. 3:5-7). What if one or both of them had died in that condition? That one or both of them would have gone to hell fire for having lived and died in fornication! (Gal. 5:19-21; 1 Cor. 6:9-1.1). On the other hand, if in the sight of God they were married, having fulfilled all the commitments of marriage according to the will of God, then, by what reasoning would they be considered as not being husband and wife? That would be nothing but according to a traditional custom of man! The word of Christ is ringing and ringing loudly: "Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me. Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. For laying aside the commandments of God, ye hold the tradition of men... Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition... Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered, and many such like things do
ye" (Mark 7:6-13).

But then a word of advice (if not of caution): As a child of God, you may buy your food or cloth or car on credit. You may buy concrete blocks for the building of your house on credit. But do not marry your wife on credit! Try as much as possible to fulfil all the legitimate obligations demanded by the culture under which you live in order to win approval and recognition for your marriage. "Whatever ye do, do all to the glory of God. Give none offence neither to the Jews nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God. Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be
saved"(l Cor. 10:31-33). That way, you will have clarity of conscience as you "drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well ... Let thy fountain be blessed and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all

times; and be thou ravished always with her love" (Pro. 5:15-19).

In this connection, there is a word or two for our Christian-parents too: if you have to come up with a list of requirements and charge bride-price at all, let the list be as short and the dowry be as reasonable as would be affordable for your proposed son-in-law. In this way, you will be putting a small nail on the head of the general prevalence of promiscuity among our youths. Let us always remember that there is nothing we have that we have not received (1 Cor. 4:7). In any case, "children are an heritage of the Lord" (Psa. 127:3; Josh. 24:3). We as parents are merely stewards of God in this regard (Gen. 48:9); and faithfulness is required of stewards (1 Cor. 4:2).

Civil law (or marriage registry) may join together people that are not eligible for marriage in the sight of God. To that extent, that arrangement is adulterous (Matt. 5:32; 19:9). Moreover, a judge in a court of law may proclaim "divorce" because, as judges are wont to say, "the marriage is irretrievably broken." The Word of God says, "What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder" (Matt. 19:6). No man, no judge, no father, no mother, no father-in-law or mother-in-law has the right to put asunder a man and a woman that God Almighty has joined together!

What about parental consent in marriage? It goes without saying that a young man and a young woman who are marrying themselves are products of two homes; or better still, a son and a daughter of some parents. Moreover, in any culture, taking and giving in marriage of one's son or daughter are some of the joys and honour anybody can enjoy in this life (cf. Matt. 22:1-14; 24:38). Ordinarily, why would any young man or woman ever contemplate robbing his(her) parents of this joy and honour? We should all remember that the young man or woman of today is the father or mother of tomorrow! Surely, no one would be happy to be at the receiving end of this type of outlandish behaviour. The golden rule states: "Therefore all things whatsoever ye would thaft men should do to you, do ye even so to them, for this is the law and the prophets" (Matt. 7:12). Besides, one of the eternal decrees of God is:"... whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall reap life everlasting" (Gal. 6:7-8).

But this writer is aware of a situation where a young man got married without even notifying his father, talk less of seeking his consent. When questioned, his answer was that his father did him much evil by his "refusal" to finance his university education, even though he (the father) had the means. Surely, this young man, like the rest of us, should realize that in spite of what our parents did or didn't do, they are the vehicles through which we came into this world (1 Tim. 5:4). We may become whatever in life, they begat us. Certainly, we came before we become! The Bible speaks of "a generation that curseth their father, and doth not bless their mother" (Pro. 30:11; cf. 2 Tim. 3:1-5). Moreover, our young men in this particular instance needs a tutorial on vengeance; that it truly belongs to God and not to us (Rom. 12:19).

Having said all this, what about the marriage that was contracted without the consent of this man's father? The marriage is right and sacrosanct if each of the two parties has the divine right to marry! In this writer's home, for instance, it is a settled matter. That "baddy" and "Mummy" will not give their consent to any marriage arrangement involving any of their children AND a non-believer. God forbid that any of these children should get involved with a non-believer as wife or husband. But just in case, will the withholding of the consent of "Daddy" and" Mummy" invalidate any marriage? No! If the young man and the young lady have the right to marry and each of them agree to leave their father and mother, cleave unto themselves and unite their bodies as one, God will join them together. The marriage will be right in the sight of God even though "Daddy" and "Mummy" don't consent to it!

But again, ordinarily, why would anyone not respect the will or wishes of his parents? Why would anyone - and a Christian for that matter - minimize the need for seeking and having the consent of his parents in this all-important matter? In any case, it is our considered view that if parents have been what they ought to be, living by righteous and godly principles, they will build homes where the will of God will be respected and obeyed. In homes where the will of God is taught and respected, homes where the children are brought up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord, marriage without the consent of parents would be a taboo! (Pro. 22:6; Eph. 6:1-3).

God, give us Christian homes!

Homes where the Bible is loved and taught,

Homes where the Master's will is sought,

Homes crowned with beauty Thy love hath wrought;

God, give us Christian homes! Amen and Amen.

JESUS SUFFERED AGONY

What brought agony?

"And we know that the whole world lieth in wickedness." (I John 5:19). This grieved the heart of God (Genesis 6:5-6). The wickedness did not originate from God because everything that He made was very good (Genesis 1:31). Man becomes sinner when he transgresses the law of God (1 John 3:4); and or commits unrighteousness (1 John 5:17); and or does anything that is not of faith (Romans 14:23) and or fails to do good having known it (James 4:17). The scriptures declared that "all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God." (Romans 3:23). You are included in the list of sinners! And the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord (Romans 6:23). Your sins brought the agony which Jesus bore for you. You can benefit from this agony and death if you can just trust Him for His love.

God's Love Made Jesus to Bear the Agony

"For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). God's love for and to mankind was exhibited by sending Jesus Christ of Nazareth to the world as a ransom for the sins of the world that the world through Him might be saved and not actually for condemnation of mankind (John 3:17-18).

 
 

Jesus, the Christ left His father's house of light, His glory circled throne for earthly night, for wandering and sadness in order to lay His life for mankind, He suffered the highest degree of molestation (Matthew 27:36-44), pains (Matthew 27:27-31; John 19:28-29), bitterest agony (Luke 22:44), and humiliation. Jesus Christ gave His life a ransom on Calvary; he bore all those sufferings, pains, agony, molestation and death for mankind to have the opportunity of crossing from death to life. He received the crown of thorn on His head, and spear that pierced His side, He bled and bore all the agony that you might live, and He took the place of death for you that you might live. He, being innocent, was crucified among two thieves (Matthew 15:27-28; 1 Peter 2:22). Jesus Christ died for ALL ... and rose again (II Corinthians 5:15).

All of these and several others stated in the New Testament are summarized under this phrase -The Gospel of Christ. The gospel of Christ is the goodness about the kingdom of God and of salvation through Christ. It is the powerful means appointed of all who believe and embrace it. It is the power by which God saves men (Romans 1:16).

The gospel has basic facts to believe. They are the death of Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:1-3; John 19:33); burial of Jesus Christ (I Corinthians 15:4; Matthew 27:59-60); and resurrection of Jesus Christ (I Corinthians 15:4; Matthew 28:5-6) for the purpose of saving men. These facts are to be preached (Mark 16:15), be heard (Romans 10:13-17), and be believed by anyone who is willing to enjoy the benefits accrued from the atonement of Jesus Christ.

Behold the Goodness of God

Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God (Romans 11:22). Anyone who can just believe the gospel of Christ will benefit from the death of Christ, but anyone who has not believed that Jesus Christ was sent by God (John 3:16); to die and that He died for our sins and that He was buried and that He rose again from the dead the third day (I Corinthians 15:1-4; 2 Corinthians 5:15; Matthew 28:5-6) has not appropriated the benefit of the death and resurrection of Jesus to himself. "He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God" and "... the wrath of God abideth on him" (John 3:18, 36).

Promise of the Gospel To be Received

If anyone should believe the submission of the scriptures, such will receive the promises of God. God promised remission (forgiveness) of sins (Romans 6:17-18); gift of Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38; 5:32); eternal life (I John 2:25).

Commands of the Gospel to be Obeyed

The gospel of Christ has commands to be obeyed. In order to receive the promises of God pertaining to the gospel of Christ, one must first believe the facts of the gospel (death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ - Mark 16:16) and must repent of his sins (Acts 17:30-31; 2:38; Luke 13:3), must confess his faith in Christ (Acts 8:37; Matthew 10:32-33; Romans 10:8-10) and be baptized in water (Acts 8:38; 6:3-4; Matthew 28:19; Mark 16:15-16; 1 Peter 3:21; Galatians 3:26-27) for remission of his sins.

Whenever these steps are taken by anyone, God adds such a person to the body of Christ (Acts 2:47; 1Peter 1:18-19; Ephesians 4:4; Colossians 1:18, 24) which is the church of Christ (Colossians 1:18, 24), the kingdom of God (John 18:36; Matthew 28:18; Ephesians 1:22-23; 5:23-27). God writes such person's name in the Lamb's book of life (Revelation 20:15; 21:27). Without obedience to the gospel, one is eternally lost (2 Thessalonians 1:6-9).

Our Plea

That body of Christ is not a denomination of men. God denounces denominationalism (1 Corinthians 1:10); God wants His people united (John 17:21; 13:35). This group of people; will not bow down to the erroneous teachings of men neither will they teach for doctrines the commandments of men (Matthew 15:8-9). They worship God in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24). They speak where the Bible speaks and remain silent where it is silent (1 Peter 4:11).

The agony that Jesus bore was for the purpose of saving mankind from the horror of hell fire. Glory be to God who commended his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Jesus Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).

You too can appropriate the benefits of Christ's death to yourself by following the New Testament pattern as enumerated above. You too can be part of this body of Christ today if you can just believe the simple truth of the Gospel, repent of your sins, confess your faith in Christ, be baptized and remain faithful to Him and renounce all forms of denominationalism. Answer the call of Jesus today who says "all things are ready, come" (Matthew 22:4; 11:28; Revelation 3:20) by showing your love to him by being baptised. Baptism is the point at which faith makes one a child of God by putting one into Christ (Galatians 3:26-27). It is for remission of sins (Acts 2:38). It is when one's sins are washed away in Jesus' blood (Acts 22:16)

Conclusion

Will you accept God's wonderful news that Jesus died for your sins and be baptized into Christ to put on Christ so that all your sins will be forgiven in His agony and death?
